Job Title: Communications Intern
Bureau/Division: Resources & Acquisitions Bureau
Location: Ames, Iowa (On-site)
Schedule: Up to 20 hours/week during the school year; up to 40 hours/week during breaks (flexible around class schedules)
Duration: Summer with option to extend into academic year

About the Role

The Communications Intern will support the Resources and Acquisitions Bureau’s Facilities team by delivering clear, timely updates that keep internal DOT customers informed about workplace modernization efforts. This includes maintaining the Workplace Modernization site and providing regular communication on bureau moves, remodel progress, space changes, and campus-wide impacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Update the Workplace Modernization site with accurate, easy-to-follow information on remodel phases, bureau relocations, space changes, and project timelines
  • Draft concise internal communications on facility projects, closures, outages, repairs, and safety notices
  • Create updates for email, digital signage, SharePoint, and Teams channels
  • Coordinate with Resources and Acquisitions Bureau teams and leadership to verify details
  • Maintain a running log of facility-related communications
  • Assist with templates, communication schedules, and consistent messaging
     Support ad-hoc needs, including move notices and wayfinding updates

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Teams, SharePoint)
  • Organized, collaborative, and able to manage multiple deadlines
  • Interest in facilities operations, internal communications, or public service

Minimum Qualification Requirements

 

 

Current enrollment in a college/university program (Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, Public Administration, or related field preferred)

Ability to work on site in Ames

Strong attention to detail and professionalism
