Environmental Compliance Specialist I

The Lead Accreditation and Oversight Division, Lead Oversight Section within the Land and Materials Administration, is currently hiring for four entry-level Environmental Compliance Specialist I. The selected candidates will perform field inspections of residential rental properties and lead-abatement construction projects across Maryland to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. Responsibilities include inspecting hazardous waste, airborne particulates, water pollution, ionizing radiation, and toxic substances. Additionally, incumbents will provide technical assistance and professional consultation regarding lead hazards to various agencies and the public.

Working Conditions: These positions involve working in various weather conditions and urban settings, often at construction sites. The role includes exposure to hazardous conditions, low levels of radiation from testing equipment, and potential contact with hazardous materials. Physical requirements include lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, and wearing protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, and masks.

Field Work & Travel: These are field positions requiring statewide travel across all Maryland jurisdictions. The incumbents will be required to drive a State vehicle and must meet the following requirements:

Driver’s License: A valid license with no more than five points.

Out-of-State Licenses: Candidates with out-of-state licenses must provide a certified driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment.

Background Check: Employment is contingent upon a background investigation that includes verifying employment, education, and criminal records.
