Interim Minister of Music
Position Summary
The Interim Minister of Music provides stable, skilled leadership for the church’s blended worship ministry during a season of transition. This role ensures continuity in Sunday worship, supports volunteer musicians, and maintains healthy ministry rhythms while the church prepares for a permanent Minister of Music. The interim is not expected to cast long-term vision but to steward the current ministry with excellence, pastoral sensitivity, and professionalism.

- Works collaboratively with: Senior Pastor, Musicians, Choir and Technical Team
Position Type
- Interim, part-time
- Estimated 10–20 hours per week
- 3–6 month term, with possibility of extension
Primary Responsibilities
1. Worship Leadership
- Lead Sunday morning worship services in a blended style (choir + praise team + instrumentalists).
- Select and prepare music that reflects the church’s theological commitments and blended worship identity.
- Coordinate with the pastor on church service and flow.
- Ensure musical transitions, pacing, and congregational engagement are smooth and pastoral.
2. Rehearsal Leadership
- Lead weekly choir rehearsals and praise team/band rehearsals.
- Provide clear direction, musical coaching, and encouragement to volunteers.
- Maintain a positive, grace-filled rehearsal environment.
3. Volunteer Support & Coordination
- Support and encourage choir members, praise team vocalists, instrumentalists, and tech volunteers.
- Communicate weekly schedules, music selections, and expectations.
- Collaborate with musicians and tech team to ensure readiness for Sunday.
4. Worship Planning & Administration
- Prepare weekly worship orders and music plans.
- Coordinate with the church office for bulletin information, slides, and scheduling.
- Maintain the music library and digital resources as needed.
- Provide advance planning for special Sundays (Communion, Baptisms, Holidays).
5. Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate proactively with the pastor and church leadership regarding needs, challenges, and scheduling.
- Maintain healthy, professional boundaries appropriate for an interim role.
Secondary Responsibilities (As Time Allows)
- Assist with seasonal services (Easter, Christmas, fourth of July).
- Provide short-term musical coaching or training for volunteers.
- Offer input on worship ministry health to support the permanent search process.
Not Expected of the Interim
- Long-term visioning or restructuring of the worship ministry
- Hiring or dismissing volunteers
- Overhauling worship style or culture
- Major program development (e.g., launching new ensembles)
- Leading the permanent search process
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience leading blended worship (choir + musicians).
- Strong musical proficiency (vocal and/or instrumental).
- Ability to lead rehearsals effectively and pastorally.
- Experience working with volunteer musicians.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to step into an existing ministry with humility and adaptability.
- Alignment with the church’s mission, values, and theological commitments.
Hours & Compensation
- Part-time, weekly stipend (based on experience).
- Compensation determined by Personnel Committee and approved by church leadership.
- No benefits unless otherwise approved.
Physical & Technical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods during rehearsals and services.
- Ability to lead vocally and/or instrumentally.
- Familiarity with ProPresenter preferred but not required.
- Basic understanding of sound, projection, and livestream coordination.
