STEAM Dream High School Instructor
Job Summary
We are seeking 2 dynamic STEAM Instructors to lead a two-week, full-day summer pilot program (8 AM - 3 PM). Instructors will facilitate interactive workshops, guide student project development, and support students in exploring multiple STEAM disciplines. This role is ideal for educators or professionals with experience in engineering, STEM education, or project-based learning and those interested in jumping into programming with enthusiasm and an open-mind.
Program Structure
Student Cohort: 15–25 incoming 9th grade students
Instructional Team: 2 Instructors, 2 Instructional Assistants (IAs)
2-Week Program Breakdown
Week 1 - Discipline Exploration (Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, etc.) [No experience needed]
Week 2 - Project Development & Showcase
Responsibilities
- Facilitate engaging, hands-on STEAM workshops aligned to daily themes aligned with foundational math and science concepts
- Guide students through project-based learning and design processes
- Support student collaboration, problem-solving, and presentation development
- Collaborate with co-instructors, IAs, and guest speakers
- Maintain a structured, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment
- Participate in pre-program training and curriculum review sessions
- Communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and other relevant staff
- Assist with attendance verification and ensure students are released at the correct stops.
- Support younger students or those needing additional assistance during transit.
- Report any behavioral, safety, or incident concerns to program leadership promptly.
- Help maintain a positive and inclusive environment aligned with the mission of Bright Star Community Outreach
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree (or progress towards bachelor’s degree) required.
- STEM or teaching degrees preferred
- Experience teaching or facilitating STEM/STEAM programming (high school preferred).
- Experience with project-based or experiential learning models.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Ability to pass required background checks and meet program safety requirements.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work during scheduled summer hours.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to engage and motivate diverse groups of students.
- Ability to supervise and engage students in a calm, respectful manner.
- Awareness of student safety procedures and emergency protocols.
- Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in unexpected situations.
- Team-oriented and able to collaborate effectively with drivers and program staff.
- Ability to attend paid PD sessions in weeks leading up to program start.
Preferred Attributes
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Background in at least one relevant discipline (e.g., engineering, robotics, technology, life sciences).

Schedule & Compensation
- Program Preparation: 9 hours total - 3 hours for 3 weeks beginning on June 15th [$540]
- Program Preparation during the week before (June 29th - July 3rd) must be done on-site at the Turn Center (4444 S Evans Ave, Chicago, IL 60653)
- Exact times will be scheduled once the offer is accepted
On-Site Instruction & Logistics
- 70 hours total - 35 hours per week [$4,200]
- Students will be in for programming from 9AM - 2PM from Monday - Friday. Instructors are expected to arrive by 8AM for set-up and depart at 3PM for clean-up and tear down.
- Program Preparation during the week before (June 29th - July 3rd) must be done on-site at the Turn Center (4444 S Evans Ave, Chicago, IL 60653)
