Position Objective:
The intern position performs a variety of field and office duties in support of the Engineering Department operations and goals. This position is designed to afford undergraduate, technical program or construction management students enrolled in civil engineering related programs an opportunity to receive a first-hand view of the dynamics of local government. The internship program provides exposure to the operation of the department and supplements academic training with the practical problems of Civil Engineering.
While primarily an in-service training program, the intern contributes work of academic quality while developing professional standards, goals and communications.
The work may involve the use of Autodesk and ESRI products , construction observations, updating City maps, survey and set out and responding to customer inquiries.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include any or all of the following:
- Assists in inspection and project management of public improvement projects, including roadways, sidewalks, watermain, sanitary sewer and storm sewer infrastructure. This position requires working outside, often on active construction sites, in variable weather conditions, standing for long periods of time and lifting up to 50 pounds. Emphasis will be on the following duties:
- Assisting with daily documentation and photos of construction activities.
- Serving as a connection between contractors and engineering department staff to answer questions that arise during construction.
- Assists with topographic surveys and construction staking for public improvement projects using robotic total stations and GPS equipment.
- Preliminary design of public improvement projects, cost estimating and determination of quantities.
- Evaluation and data collection of existing infrastructure.
- Assists in the collection of traffic data.
- Work outside of normal hours and some Saturdays as needed may be necessary. Overtime will be paid for additional hours.
- Regular attendance in the office is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Positive attitude.
- Ability to keep clear, concise and organized notes documenting daily activities for construction records.
- Willingness to adapt and assist wherever needed within the Department.
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with members of the general public as part of essential duties.
- Willingness to ask questions if a task or expectation is unclear.
- Ability to learn, understand and enforce construction standards and specifications in the field.
Supplemental Information
Minimum Qualifications:
- Student currently enrolled in an accredited civil engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management or land surveying program, with a minimum of one semester completed by the summer of 2026.
- Proficient in personal computer software including MS Office.
- Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
- Good verbal and written English communication skills.
- Ability to carry out moderately complex assignments with limited supervision.
- Ability to perform the physical demands of the position in uneven terrain.
