Summary

Provides and directs physical and mental health care for patients located primarily in the inpatient unit but must be flexible to the needs of HCI including working in other areas of the organization such as Vigo County Outpatient.  Functions as part of the interdisciplinary treatment team, in which patient care is prescribed.  Position requires some crisis management by phone. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to conduct and monitor the nursing process, which consists of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
  • Conduct admission assessments and reassessments as indicated, according to policy, procedures and standards of care.
  • Follow admission and discharge procedures.
  • Obtain and transcribe correctly the licensed independent practitioner’s LIP order.
  • Utilize nursing judgement regarding PRN medication orders within the parameters of the LIP’s orders.
  • Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Document the patient's records according to policy and procedure.
  • Assist in the identification of patient and family educational needs.
  • Participate in the teaching of patient and family educational needs especially related to physical issues.
  • Formulate a daily shift assignment according to each staff member's ability to care for the patient.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing needs for all shifts.
  • Supervise Mental Health Technicians in collaboration with the Executive Director of Nursing Services and/or IPU Supervisor.
  • Provide daily information at shift change and treatment review/discharge meetings.
  • Participate in CQI activities as assigned.
  • Plan and lead educational groups related to the patient's treatment issues.
  • Implement crisis intervention techniques when dealing with emergency situations
  • Provides crisis assessments under the supervision of an on-call psychiatrist.
  • Serve as a resource to Hamilton Center staff and community regarding available services, referral sources, emergency detention procedures, etc.
  • Participate in cross-training as assigned.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential crisis situations.
  • Maintains basic computer skills and knowledge in order to access client information and/or update information.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assure the pursuance of the principles of customer relations, total quality management, and teamwork.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional staff membership.
  • Participate in unit staff meetings and continuing education activities to continually update current knowledge regarding nursing in general and psychiatric nursing in particular.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor level Nursing degree
  • Knowledge and skills in the following areas: nursing care, psychiatric illnesses, dynamics of interpersonal relationships, nursing process, physical and psychological assessment skills, treatment planning, case management, basic pharmacology, administration of medication, operation of routine medical equipment, crisis intervention techniques and emergency care.
  • Good written and verbal skills, record keeping, time management, and interviewing skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, communication skills, and the ability to function as a team member.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Licensed by the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse.
  • Maintain current American Red Cross CPR/AED certifications.
  • Maintain current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
  • Maintain TB screening certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License in accordance with HCI’s motor vehicle policy

 All members of the Rapid Response team must maintain current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification & maintain current American Red Cross CPR certification.

  • Exposure to disturbed and potentially aggressive patients.
  • Standing, walking, bending, stooping as required to provide individualized patient care.
  • Possesses strength necessary to direct and assist in implementation of CPI interventions.

Work Environment

Environment is a hospital-like atmosphere with access to an outside patio on the in-patient unit.  Other locations are more of a transitional setting in which the patient requires assistance. This position requires the ability to work under fluctuating levels of stress in a model of least restrictive care and pro-active quality customer service.

Conditions of Employment

  • Completion of tuberculin screening no later than three days prior to first day of employment and annually thereafter
  • Completion of MMR, Varicella, influenza and coronavirus vaccine
  • Demonstrated computer literacy through successful completion of pre-employment testing may be required.
  • Completion of a pre-employment drug screening and completion of post-employment drug or alcohol tests upon reasonable suspicion of use.
  • Completion of Center-wide orientation and ALL required paperwork prior to reporting for work
  • Completion of HCI Commitment to Quality training, Trauma Informed Care, and E-Learning.
  • Successful completion of Mental Health First Aid
  • Annual restraint training
  • Attendance at all mandatory staff development and training
  • Successful completion of a six month on the job orientation period
  • Participation in payroll electronic deposit
  • Adherence to Compliance Program Plan
  • Satisfactory reference and background investigation checks.
  • OBHP qualified staff will be expected to bill MRO services, document those services in the electronic medical record, and participate in required clinical supervision.
  • OBHP qualified staff will be required to complete OBHP modules within 90 days of hire or after transfer into an OBHP position.
