Habitat Restoration Helper (UWW at Rock County) - Summer 2026 - Work Study or Regular Pay

Habitat Restoration Student Helper-Summer 2026 Rock County-Janesville:

This is a part-time student employee position and is located at the UW-Whitewater at Rock County campus. Students hired will be expected to work on the Rock campus in Janesville, Wisconsin. This is a nature-based student summer job opportunity with lots of learn as you go. Enthusiasm, open-minded attitude, enjoyment of outdoor work is a good match for this opportunity. Some experience working or exploring formally/informally in natural outdoor settings is helpful.

Job duties/qualifications to include:

  • Be enthusiastic about creating important habitat
  • Appreciate being in nature, learn what is natural and unnatural
  • Move around within any outdoor landscape on property
  • Be outside physically active for 1-2-3 hours at a time, on most days
  • Wear proper attire to be safe and get dirty while outside
  • Use simple tools-shovels, manual saws, pruners, seed spreader
  • Perform physical labor with some self direction
  • Outdoor invasive plant control, trimming and moving cut shrubbery
  • Prepping ground, planting seed, plant plugs, and trees
  • Plant and animal identification with iNaturalist or other app
  • Pulling photos from DNR wildlife camera, Outdoor photography
  • Create experimental/innovative materials related to habitat restoration
  • Project combines indoor planning, basic software knowledge, plant/animal data collection/analysis, meeting/learning with knowledgeable people

Looking into the future: Collecting and creating ideas/possibilities and planning the continuity of the habitat area. Collaborations with people/organizations, in all aspects of what is needed. Likely short trips to meet helpful people. Keeping track of information and writing up findings.
