Farm Operations Intern (Soulful Seeds, Pack Intern, Summer 2026)

**This internship is hosted by Soulful Seeds and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN.

Students are welcome to by any time during our drop-in hours, but we’ll have dedicated staff on Fridays! About Soulful Seeds: 

Soulful Seeds is a social and environmental, grassroots non-profit dedicated to addressing the root causes of food insecurity by developing and managing neighborhood gardens in Washoe County, Nevada. We envision a thriving community, and our mission is to grow connection and resiliency through neighborhood gardens. All of Soulful Seeds’ programs advance four impact priority areas: improving fresh food access, creating healthy neighborhoods, improving independence, and building meaningful social connections. Our programs include food access, education, and workforce development. 

  

Our gardens provide fresh produce from inclusive outdoor spaces, while improving the biodiversity of the landscape and promoting health and wellbeing. All of our gardens are certified USDA People’s Gardens and located in the center of high need neighborhoods for the benefit of community groups most vulnerable to food insecurity. The gardens are managed by Soulful Seeds’ small team with support from garden neighbors and community volunteers. 

 

Internship Description: 

The Farm Operations Intern will work closely with the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager to research and learn about organic farming practices, crop management, pest management, and food production in an urban setting. They will help care for crops, learn principles of composting, and the basics of crop planning. They will be assigned to care for four raised beds, develop a worm bin (vermiculture) program, and create handouts and signage to education visitors about the benefit of vermiculture. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern  
    • This internship can be full-time for four weeks or part time for a longer period of time. Final schedule and average weekly hours will be determined by intern and supervisor 
  • In addition to helping manage all aspects of the urban farm, the intern will help create launch and assess a new project in the Soulful Seeds Garden.  
    • Assist Farm staff with crop management 
    • Design and implement a raised bed crop, under guidance of the Garden Manager  
    • Research and assist with natural pest management opportunities, as needed. 
    • Research, develop, and manage a vermiculture program 
    • Develop educational information regarding vermiculture as a natural waste management  
    • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, assisting with volunteer days, weeding, and compost bay management. 
    • Other personal interest projects of benefit to the farm will be considered. 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern, with the possibility of additional work upon successful completion. 
  • Maintain a positive attitude, with strong communication 
  • Follow all farm safety procedures 
  • Complete all internship goals, set in collaboration with farm staff. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘26 semester   
  • A community-oriented individual, passionate about empowering at risk community members and growing food. 
  • Enjoys working with people of all backgrounds and abilities. 
  • Enjoys working collaboratively  
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work under sometimes strenuous weather conditions. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Basic interest in and understanding of organic gardening and composting 
  • Ability to take initiative 
  • Good problem-solving skills 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern:  

Applicants will determine their schedule at the commencement of their internship, but ideally at least four shifts between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Some work can be completed from home.  

 

PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
