Research Assistant Microbiology

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a background in microbiology for a full-time Research Assistant or Associate position in our natural products group aimed at the mass-spectrometry guided isolation of bioactive compounds from microbial sources. The successful candidate must have a B.S. or M.S. in molecular biology / microbiology, and prior work experience with fermentation of microbial species and extraction of natural products is a plus. In this position, you will be expected to advance efforts in the extraction and isolation of natural products from multiple fungal and bacterial sources. Good laboratory skills and familiarity with modern instrumentation (Shakers, Centrifuge, Liquid Handlers) are desired. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the work, strong communication skills are necessary. Responsibilities - Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Growing and collecting microbial samples for cryopreservation

• Preparing fermentation growth media for batch fermentation of bacteria and fungi

• Harvesting fermentations and checking ongoing growth

• Extracting fermentation batches to facilitate compound isolation

• Management of supplies and organization of growth schedules

• Maintaining safe conditions for culturing of microbes

• Interpret experimental data, from a variety of analytical techniques, with a high degree of reliability and accuracy

• Present and share results within the group and project team

Qualifications - Key skills

• Familiarity with fermentation of bacteria and fungi

• Basic understanding of microbial metabolism, nutrition and identification.

• Proficiency in microbial culturing and aseptic techniques.

• Must possess excellent computer literacy skills (MS Word, Excel, Power Point).

• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

• Effective time management skills

• High levels of safety awareness, personal integrity and ethics

Education and Experience: B.S. or M.S. in molecular biology or microbiology. Prior work experience in microbial fermentation and extraction will be a plus.
