Student Organizer (Money Out of Politics)

Overview

Students have an opportunity to make history by ending corporate money in politics. We’re looking for a Student Organizer to coordinate our pilot project to do just that — starting in Montana!

Students for Voting Rights launched in 2022 as our campaign to end systemic inequality in our democracy by fighting money in politics, voter suppression attempts, and the two-party grip on our elections. We fight with allies for critical democracy reforms at the federal-level, lead efforts on-the-ground to stop anti-democracy measures, and support state allies to defeat anti-democracy legislation & ballot measures.

The ideal campaign organizer is self-driven, understands the intersection of the fight for our democracy with other issues & identities (climate justice, access to healthcare, education, etc), and the role students need to play in championing systems that represent us.

In this role, you will:

  • Research & build relationships with campus/state-based anti-corruption groups to collaborate on shared campaign goals (especially youth/student-led orgs)
  • Outreach & recruit Montana high-school and college students to mobilize others to support a ballot measure that ends corporate spending in elections
  • Take initiative to setup & lead a small fellowship program for students in MT & elsewhere looking to organize around ending money in politics
  • Help increase visibility of campaign work on social media & grow our network of students following the campaign in MT
  • Share campaign updates at weekly team meetings and regularly check-in with the Students for Voting Rights Campaign Lead & the Campaigns Director about progress, barriers, and support needs
  • Other campaign responsibilities as decided by leadership

Are you a good fit for the role? We’re looking for someone with:

  • (Plus but not required) Current or recent student at a Montana college/university!
  • Capacity to work 10 hours/week on the above
  • Willingness to learn & grow as an organizer
  • Commitment to centering youth as we build a just & inclusive democracy
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to problem-solve, and respond to a rapidly-evolving organizing landscape
  • Strong interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills
  • (Nice to have) Ability to point to a past issue-based campaign you were a part of & helped win

Here’s how to apply:

About the Task Force for Democracy

We’re a youth & volunteer-led team organizing students across 6 campaigns to demand a democracy that works for our generation — not billionaires & corporations! We work alongside movement partners to center young people in the fight against advancing autocracy.

We don’t focus on partisan politics or electing candidates. We organize to end inequities in our electoral system and win a democracy our generation can be proud of!

We know that true democracy cannot only exist at the ballot box, but must be present in the workplace, and in our education. Our campaigns aim to end structural inequality across different areas of our democracy, and include: fighting voter suppression & money in politics, organizing students under autocracy, stopping a dangerous constitutional convention that would roll back our rights, using transparency laws to hold power accountable, and more!
