About the Position
This position will function broadly as support for the Communications Manager and Communications Team, overseen by the Development Director. This is an entry-level position with potential paths towards a permanent position for candidates who demonstrate strong leadership and desire continued growth.
The Digital Organizing Intern will execute digital organizing strategies and tactics to engage and build a pipeline of young people taking online action for our electoral and advocacy campaigns. These tactics will work in tandem with our face-to-face organizing, relational organizing, and offline action to build the political power of young people in Washington State. They will also support our general communications work.
The Digital Organizing Intern will have a thorough understanding of how to reach and speak to young people while leading them to take action. They will work with our Program Team and Communications Team to implement creative, engaging, and relational online strategies. The ideal candidate will have communications, branding and design, and grassroots organizing experience or a strong desire to learn and build these skills. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Social Media Management, Content Creation, & Learning (60%) - 12 Hrs per Week
- Take on the day-to-day management of social media channels: schedule posts,
manage platforms, screen and respond to messages with instruction and guidance
from the communications team. - Assist in the execution of content creation tasks: propose and provide feedback on
content ideas, write and edit copy, collect and organize photos and videos, design and edit visuals. - Lead an expansion/leveling up of the Bus’s video content production with instruction
and guidance from the communications team: establish best practices, build video templates, brainstorm and execute projects. - Co-create a learning plan at the start of the internship that covers the functions above, as well as any other communications functions of interest.
- Receive training, feedback, and shadowing opportunities in accordance with the learning plan.
Communications Team Support (30%) - 6 Hrs per Week on Avg
- Support the Communications Team’s administrative functions, including: meeting management, agenda creation, and time reporting compliance.
- Triage internal project and content requests, assign tasks, follow up on deliverables.
- Create & maintain strong internal organization systems within Google Drive, Canva, Trello, and other digital platforms
- Contribute to discussions, planning, and implementation of strategies around: 1.) Growing followers and engagement across all social media platforms 2.) Developing a digital ladder of engagement.
- Attend external communications meetings and events as assigned and occasionally speak to media on behalf of the Bus.
General Support & Operations (10%) -2 Hrs per Week on Avg
- Take an active part in Bus all-staff meetings and trainings.
- Attend and support general program and fundraising events as needed.
- Keep up with standard operational tasks including timesheets, expense reports, and contact tracking.
Qualifications for Success

- Interest in working at the Washington Bus and passionate about its mission to build youth power statewide.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience using social media and digital platforms as an engagement tool.
- High-level, intuitive understanding and/or direct working experience in modern content creation, social media trends, and youth pop culture.
- Some general experience managing projects, processes, and/or systems in a small team environment.
- High level of digital literacy, organization, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Special consideration given to applicants with video content creation experience.
Compensation
The compensation is $22.50 an hour for 15-25 hours of work per week. This is an entry-level, learning role.
Location & Work Requirements
- Hybrid Work: Our office is based in Seattle, Washington. Currently, all of our staff are working in a hybrid model and are only required to be in the office once a week. This position may require occasional additional days in office for special events or office management tasks.
- Travel Requirements: This position will require infrequent travel and in-person work throughout the Seattle and the Puget Sound area for events, meetings, and operations tasks such as picking up or dropping off items. Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license is preferred but not required.
- Location Requirement: Consideration will be given to applicants who live in or within traveling distance to Seattle.
- Evening & Weekend Work: This position will require infrequent weekend work.
Physical Demands
This position will require being on a computer for the majority of
the day, sending emails, taking calls, and attending virtual meetings. It will
occasionally require lifting and moving objects of no more than 25 lbs.
