Welding & Experiment Assembly Internship | Fall 2026

Project Description:

Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Fuels Development group, Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a motivated undergraduate student to join our team at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC). In this role, the intern will join a team that builds and qualifies experiments for nuclear test reactors, gaining meaningful, hands-on experience supporting multiple experiments across various stages of development and assembly while applying their knowledge of welding codes and standards. Work may span weld development and nondestructive examinations, the design and fabrication of tools and hardware for irradiation assembly, and the application of CAD software in support of experimental equipment design, offering a well-rounded exposure to the engineering challenges at the forefront of nuclear energy research.

Minimum Qualification:

  • Undergraduate Student enrolled full time at an accredited college/university studying chemical, mechanical, nuclear, welding engineering or closely related field.
  • Minimum Overall GPA Requirement: 3.0
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)
  • Knowledge of welding processes, fabrication techniques, and the application of welding codes and standards
  • Experience with nondestructive examination methods (leak check, dye penetrant, radiography, visual)

 

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience quality assurance documentation and/or ASME NQA-1 processes
  • Familiarity with CAD software for mechanical design or experimental equipment applications
  • Ability to work hands-on in a team-based, technical environment involving the construction, testing, and assembly of engineered systems
