Culinary Arts Instructor (Full-Time) (35 Hour)
The State of Connecticut, Department, Department of Correction (DOC) Unified School District #1 is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Culinary Arts Instructor to teach the technology used in the industry such as kitchen sanitation and safety, food preparation, and cooking methods.
The Culinary Arts program is the first step toward pursuing a career in commercial food preparation. Along with classroom and laboratory study, students will participate in a cooperative work experience course while they learn professionalism, leadership, teamwork and service. Students will analyze the theory and techniques of food preparation and presentation and learn how to properly operate commercial kitchen equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
- Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar.
- First shift, Monday – Friday
- Full time, 35 hours per week
- Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on ‘Step one’ of the pay plan, in the tier that their highest level of education corresponds to. Salary details derived from the P-3B T1-T4 35 Hour Pay Plan are outlined below:
- B.A. Degree $68,792.00
- M.A. Degree $74,241.00
- Sixth Year $77,294.00
Selected candidates may be required to present a lesson plan in front of students in one of our Correctional Facilities as part of the interview process.

YOUR ROLE
The Connecticut Department of Correction Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society.
As a Vocational Instructor with the DOC, you will be responsible for:
- Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
- Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
- Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
- Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
- Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
- Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
- Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
- Maintaining student records and writing reports; and
- Modeling positive teaching practices.
We are seeking a candidate who possesses:
- An understanding of the different types of learning styles of students and being able to teach to their ability levels.
- The ability to work with a variety of different disciplines throughout the day.
- Working knowledge of classroom routines and disciplines.
- Understanding of the operation of commercial kitchens
- Training experience within the culinary or food service industry
- The ability to follow the class schedule as provided by the school administration with the understanding that it may change unexpectedly.
