About Contempo Space
Contempo Space is a custom furniture manufacturer based in Passaic, NJ. We design, build, and deliver made-to-order furniture out of a 384,000 sq ft production facility, serving residential and trade clients across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
We are rebuilding our entire digital platform from scratch: a headless commerce backend, a modern storefront, and a product configurator that supports millions of possible furniture combinations. This is not a theoretical exercise. The platform is actively being built and will go live serving real customers.
You would be joining a small engineering team where there is no separation between “intern work” and “real work.” The code you write ships to production.
The Role
We are looking for an SDE Intern to work across our frontend and backend codebases, with a focus on the storefront and its connection to the commerce backend. Day to day, that means building UI, wiring it to backend data via API, and making sure everything works end to end.
You will work directly alongside the developer building the platform. That means real code reviews, real architectural discussions, and real ownership of features. This is not a separate intern track. When your feature ships, you will see it live.
No prior e-commerce or headless commerce experience is needed. We care more about your ability to learn quickly, write clean code, and work through problems independently.
What You’ll Work On
- Building and refining storefront pages and UI components for custom furniture products
- Connecting frontend components to the commerce backend (queries, mutations, data fetching)
- Translating Figma designs into responsive, accessible components
- Improving performance and accessibility across the storefront (Core Web Vitals, image optimization, semantic HTML, keyboard navigation)
- Contributing to the storefront’s component library and design system
- Writing tests and contributing to QA across the platform
- Participating in code reviews and debugging sessions
- Shipping features end to end, from implementation through deployment
- Exploring AI-powered features for the storefront as the platform evolves
- Possible light exposure to ERP integrations depending on project needs and your interest
Required
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Computer Science or a related field (junior or senior standing)
- Solid working knowledge of TypeScript, React, and Next.js
- Comfortable building responsive UIs and thinking in terms of component architecture
- Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to navigate unfamiliar codebases
Preferred
None of these are dealbreakers. If you check some but not all, we still want to hear from you.
- Familiarity with Tailwind CSS, Docker, or PostgreSQL
- Experience with GraphQL (queries, mutations, codegen)
- Comfort working from Figma designs
- Solid Git/GitHub workflow (branches, pull requests, code review)
- Interest in testing and QA practices
- Personal projects, open-source contributions, or hackathon work you can point to
What You’ll Get
- Production features you can demo and point to in your portfolio, not toy projects
- Hands-on experience with a modern full-stack headless commerce architecture
- Exposure to building software for a physical product company with real manufacturing and logistics, not another SaaS app
- Direct collaboration with the developer building the platform, including code review, architecture discussions, and pair programming
- Experience working with AI-assisted development tools as part of the day-to-day engineering workflow
