Editorial Intern
The deadline for our fall 2026 internship program is May 22.
Do you like digging to find answers to hard questions? Do you enjoy captivating friends with a well-told story? The Christian Science Monitor is a Pulitzer Prize-winning, international news site that offers short-term paid internships. We look for self-starters who have analytical skills, a basic understanding of world events, and can write and edit with clarity and precision. Multimedia skills are a plus. Come work alongside top-flight senior editors and writers in a dynamic newsroom that strives to show hope and progress amid a divisive media landscape. Visit csmonitor.com to see our difference.
Why this internship stands out: Editorial interns participate in a robust curriculum of workshops centered on developing journalism skills. Those skills are deployed in real-time, essential newsroom duties. Past interns have contributed to award-winning coverage and gone on to have active careers as journalists both in the United States and internationally.
Duties include: Posting wire stories every morning, assisting with the audio production of our Daily podcast in the afternoons, and creating content for our Weekly print magazine. There will be a limited time to pitch, report, and write your own news and feature stories. Additional assignments or other tasks may arise, too.
What we look for in applicants: We prioritize applicants with journalistic experience in the classroom, prior internships, or campus newspapers. We also give top priority to candidates who demonstrate an understanding of Monitor journalism.
Essential skills:
• Editing
• Writing
• Research
• Attention to detail
• Ability to work in a team environment
MISSION & CULTURE
The intern strives to uphold The Christian Science Monitor’s founding mission “to spread undivided the Science that operates unspent,” and its object “to injure no man but to bless all mankind.” That includes hewing to our five operational guidelines:
- Bring a healing, purifying thought to many homes. We counteract cynicism about news and humanity by upholding a higher standard of both.
- Get above the fray. Because we’re owned by a church, we’re free from corporate and political interests.
- Cover the day’s vital global news. We provide a trustworthy and concise compilation for our thoughtful, busy readers.
- Investigate ideals and endeavors, not just events. We keep abreast of the times by recognizing key currents of thought and their impact.
- Be clean, family-friendly, and non-sensational. We are “a newspaper for the home.”
The intern also embraces our newsroom’s three culture pillars:
- We’re scrappy. We seek creative solutions. We’re hungry and nimble. We experiment and streamline.
- We’re rigorous. We embrace others challenging our ideas and our writing. We strive for editorial excellence, and we help each other continually improve. We know that feedback is a gift.
- We have unwavering fidelity to our mission. We make our founding mission the basis for every decision and initiative.
