About Busco

Busco is a proximity-based event discovery and analytics platform. We help people find what is happening around them in real time, and we help cities, universities, and local businesses understand the economic and cultural pulse of their communities.

Position Summary

Busco is fundamentally a location-based platform, and the way we think about space, density, and proximity is central to everything we build. Our Geospatial Engineer Intern will help us turn geographic data into tools that planners, city leaders, and business owners can actually use. You will build map-based visualizations and dashboards, work with GIS data, and help us communicate the spatial dimensions of local economic activity in ways that are clear, beautiful, and actionable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build interactive dashboards and map-based visualizations from Busco's geospatial data
  • Process, clean, and analyze GIS datasets relevant to local commerce and urban activity
  • Collaborate with the data and engineering teams on the geospatial layer of the platform
  • Contribute to deliverables shared with municipal, university, and economic development partners
  • Help define how Busco visualizes spatial data across products and reports

Required Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience in GIS, urban planning, geography, or a closely related field
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS, Mapbox, Kepler.gl, or Deck.gl
  • Comfort with Python, R, or JavaScript for spatial analysis and visualization
  • Strong eye for visual clarity and information design
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PostGIS or other spatial databases
  • Familiarity with urban data sources such as Census, OpenStreetMap, or municipal open data
  • Exposure to dashboard frameworks such as Streamlit, Dash, or Observable
  • Genuine interest in cities, planning, and local economic policy

What You Will Gain

  • Real-world experience contributing to deliverables for city and university partners
  • A portfolio of dashboards and visualizations grounded in live data
  • Mentorship from Busco's CTO and analytics leadership
  • Exposure to the intersection of urban policy, technology, and local economic development

Our Team and Culture

Our culture is friendly, kind, and highly effective. We do not turn in bad work. We do not miss deadlines. And we ask for help when we need it. We operate asynchronously, which means your weekly hours are yours to manage, and we trust you to deliver. We practice horizontal leadership, which means every voice is encouraged to speak up regardless of title or tenure. As a pre-seed company, priorities can shift quickly, and the best teammates here are those who stay flexible, communicate openly, and treat ambiguity as an invitation rather than an obstacle. Sometimes an intern is the most informed person in the room on a given topic, and that is genuinely welcome here. We are all learning together.

Position Logistics

  • Schedule: 25 to 30 hours per week
  • Location: Remote, with hybrid flexibility for candidates local to Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Duration: Summer 2026
  • Compensation: Unpaid, with a stipend anticipated upon the close of our current funding round. We are happy to coordinate with your home institution if it offers funding or academic credit for unpaid internships.
  • Eligibility: Open to undergraduate and graduate students
