Part-Time to Full-Time IT Support Technician (Tier 1/2)
We are a family-owned Business to Business IT Consulting firm and Managed Service Provider (MSP) supporting small & mid-sized business clients (1-150 users). We are seeking a part-time to full-time Tier 1/2 IT Support Technician to assist the technical team with providing new deployment, refresh, and day-to-day end-user support. Over time, the selected candidate will become highly familiar with our service delivery methods, client environments, and internal processes.
Schedule & Work Model
- Part-time, Hourly, 1099 Independent Contractor
- Potential for expanded hours, advancement, or a full-time role based on experience, aptitude, performance, and business needs
- Core business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm, but we are willing to work around school schedules and can be flexible with workdays, start times, and end times where possible
- Occasional weekend hours may be needed and may be paid at a differential rate
- Additional hours beyond the regular agreed-upon schedule may occasionally be requested for project work, depending on availability
- Mix of remote support and onsite visits (varies, see Travel section below)
- This position will begin primarily with in-office work at our Vernon Hills, IL office and onsite client visits
Job Responsibilities
- Deliver the absolute best customer service experience during all client interactions, in person and on the phone
- Support the technical team with day to day operations, projects and audits
- Support users by phone, email and in-person with Windows, MacOS, Software (websites, apps), Hardware (printing, peripherals), connectivity
- Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace Administration (email, accounts, permissions)
- Troubleshoot Wi-Fi and common small office network issues
- Support printers/scanners, POS devices, and VoIP (training provided)
- Assist with onsite installs and service visits (workstations, network equipment, printers, VoIP)
- Document work and send short recaps when follow-up is needed
- Assist management with internal projects, new deployments, or other duties as assigned
- Assist our structured cabling team with wiring/camera-related work as needed
Requirements
- Kind, patient, and personable with strong customer service skills (in-person and over the phone).
- Analytical, calm under pressure, and naturally comfortable with unfamiliar technology. If you can walk up to a device, application, or issue you have never seen before, figure out how it works, and explain it clearly to non-technical people, you will do well here. For example, if you can easily program a thermostat, DVR, watch, or other unfamiliar device, that kind of aptitude is valuable in this role.
- Comfortable troubleshooting Windows, Software, Printer, Phone & Networking Issues.
- Self-starter who can stay focused and productive with minimal direction.
- Flexible and good at pivoting between tasks. Some days will be driving all over Chicagoland, other days will be setting up systems for deployment in our office.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.

- Possesses an analytical mind: Assess the problem, look for recent changes/root causes, figure out a solution or workaround if a fix isn't readily available or apparent.
- Not be intimidated by situations where you have limited or no prior experience, and present yourself with confidence and professionalism in front of clients during new or challenging issues. You may encounter unfamiliar errors or applications, and that is okay. Clients should always feel they are in capable hands, backed by the expertise of our team.
- Have a real interest in technology beyond the typical helpdesk path. If you run OpenBSD or Linux as your primary operating system, built a home lab, self-host services, have configured your own firewall, experimented with virtualization, or otherwise chose a harder technical path because you wanted to understand how something really works, we should probably chat.
- Bring hands-on experience with several of the technologies or skill areas listed in the Desired Experience section below, whether from work experience, school, labs, home labs, or personal projects.
Desired Experience
- 1-2 Years Experience working for an IT Service Provider, MSP, Helpdesk (or other equivalent experience) strongly preferred.
- Desktop/Laptop/Printer/Network Troubleshooting and Hardware & Software Support
- Linux & Windows Server Administration (Addressing issues, keeping servers up to date, etc.)
- Hypervisor Setup, Best Practices, and Administration. Strong Preference for Vates XCP-ng/Xen Orchestra/Citrix Xenserver or VMWare ESXi/vSphere.
- Windows PowerShell and/or Linux Shell Scripting (passionate scripter, comfortable writing and understanding scripts, not just generating them with AI tools.)
- Ubiquiti UniFi Network Deployment & Management.
- Synology DiskStation Manager, Active Backup for (Business/M365/Google Workspace), Virtual Machine Manager, etc.
- Microsoft 365 & Google Workspace Administration & Deployment. Strong preference for candidates with security best practice training.
- NetSapiens administration (users, devices, call routing basics, troubleshooting).
Travel
Local travel is required for onsite client visits and project work. Most travel is within McHenry, Lake, Cook, DuPage, and Will counties, with the majority of work in Southern Lake and Northern Cook counties. Travel reimbursement may be available depending on the assignment, distance, and scope of work.
Compensation
Starting compensation is typically $15-$25 per hour, depending on experience, technical aptitude, customer service skills, and alignment with the qualifications listed above.
We are open to candidates who are earlier in their IT career but have strong troubleshooting instincts, professionalism, and a willingness to learn. Compensation may increase over time based on performance, reliability, skill growth, and the value contributed to the team and our clients.
Occasional weekend or after-hours work may be paid at a differential rate when applicable.
