Undergraduate Research Assistant – Efficient AI and Carbon-Aware Machine Learning

We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student to join the Efficient AI Lab at Oakland University to work on a research project focused on predictive carbon footprint estimation for modern deep learning models (e.g., diffusion transformers). The project involves developing tools and models to estimate energy consumption and environmental impact of AI models prior to deployment.

Expected Responsibilities:
 

• Assist in implementing and testing machine learning models related to efficiency and sustainability
• Support the development of predictive frameworks for estimating compute, energy, and carbon footprint of AI workloads
• Conduct experiments on GPUs (e.g., PyTorch-based implementations) and analyze results
• Help collect, organize, and visualize experimental data (e.g., FLOPs, runtime, energy metrics)
• Contribute to research reports, presentations, and potentially publications
