Automotive Design Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Automotive Design Engineer to support vehicle component development programs in the Columbus, Ohio area. This role focuses on mechanical design and development of brackets, mounts, and structural components for automotive applications. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience using CATIA for 3D modeling and drafting, with a strong understanding of design for manufacturability, packaging constraints, and engineering release processes.

This is a 12-month contract opportunity offering competitive compensation and a full benefits package.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop automotive brackets, mounts, supports, and related mechanical components using CATIA
  • Create and revise 3D models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings
  • Support vehicle packaging studies and ensure components meet space, performance, and durability requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, suppliers, quality, and program management
  • Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis and design reviews
  • Support prototype builds, testing activities, and engineering change implementation
  • Ensure compliance with automotive standards, specifications, and release procedures
  • Drive continuous improvement in design processes and documentation practices

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related technical field
  • 2+ years of automotive design engineering experience
  • Proficiency with CATIA for 3D design and drafting
  • Experience in bracket design, structural supports, or underbody/mechanical packaging components
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and manufacturing processes
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced product development environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier programs
  • Familiarity with PLM systems and engineering release workflows
  • Knowledge of sheet metal, welded assemblies, or lightweight structures
