About Countervail Engineering
Founded in 2019, Countervail Engineering helps transportation agencies and contractors manage the complexity of modern infrastructure programs. We apply Systems Engineering and Integration principles to rail and transit projects across the country, partnering with public agencies and construction firms to deliver systems that millions of people rely on every day.
Position Overview
We are seeking an entry-level or junior engineer who can do two things well: rigorous software testing and verification work, and clear technical diagramming for physical infrastructure. Most of your time will be desk-based, analytical, and detail-intensive. You will conduct structured software reviews, author and execute test procedures in support of software V&V, and produce fiber routing and interface diagrams that support systems integration. Occasional field visits to active transit sites are part of the role, but they are a small slice of the job.
This is a great fit for someone who is precise, methodical, and wants to develop expertise across both the software and physical infrastructure sides of transit systems engineering.
What You’ll Do
Software V&V and Testing:
- Author and execute software and system test procedures
- Conduct structured, high-focus reviews of software design documents, interface control documents, and specifications
- Support software V&V planning: test strategies, traceability matrices (RVTMs), and acceptance evidence
- Log and track defects and non-conformances in JIRA; support closure verification
- Support API testing, functional testing, and formal acceptance documentation
Infrastructure Documentation:
- Create and maintain fiber routing diagrams, cable schedules, and interface drawings
- Support configuration tracking and document control for physical layer communications systems
- Coordinate with contractors and stakeholders to capture interface conditions and verify as-built information
Systems Engineering Support:
- Assist with external interface coordination and requirements traceability
- Contribute to working group meetings and technical documentation
- Participate in occasional field visits to transit sites to verify conditions or support test activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or graduating soon) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- Interest in software testing, V&V, or systems integration
- Precision and patience with detailed technical documentation and structured reviews
- Exposure to tools like JIRA, Confluence, TestRail, or DOORs through coursework, internships, or projects
- Ability to read and produce technical diagrams (block diagrams, schematics, or cable routing drawings) in Visio or similar
- Comfortable working on-site in the Oakland, CA area with occasional field visits to transit facilities
Bonus If You Have (Not Required)
- Any experience with formal software V&V, acceptance testing, or test documentation in a technical environment
- Familiarity with fiber optic systems, structured cabling, or communications infrastructure
- Exposure to transit or transportation infrastructure programs
- INCOSE systems engineering concepts, MBSE, or SysML exposure
- Scripting or Linux/Windows test environment experience
What We’re Looking For
- High attention to detail and comfort with sustained, focused analytical work
- Organized and disciplined approach to documentation
- Strong written and verbal communicator
- Collaborative and comfortable in multidisciplinary team environments
- Willing to learn field context and occasionally visit active construction or transit sites
