Weld Engineer

Position/Title: Weld Engineer – Custom Automation Equipment

Position Description:

The Weld Engineer is responsible for developing and applying welding engineering expertise to support the design, build, and continuous improvement of automated systems, fixtures, and tooling. This role ensures all welded components and assemblies meet customer requirements, industry standards, and B-K Tool & Design’s commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, document, and maintain welding processes, procedures, and work instructions for fabrication and assembly of equipment, fixtures, and tooling. 
  • Select appropriate welding processes, filler metals, and consumables based on material, design requirements, and service conditions. 
  • Create and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) per applicable codes and standards. 
  • Interpret drawings, 3D models, and customer specifications to define weld requirements and ensure design for weldability. 
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers and engineering teams to optimize designs for manufacturability, cost, and quality. 
  • Provide welding technical support during manufacturing, assembly, and installation. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve welding-related issues, including distortion control and weld integrity. 
  • Support non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements (visual, PT, MT, UT, RT) and coordinate with suppliers as needed. 
  • Ensure compliance with customer, industry (AWS), and regulatory standards. 
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to welding processes, quality, safety, and productivity. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of welding engineering experience in manufacturing, fabrication, or automation environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.6, and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Experience developing WPS/PQR/WPQ and managing welding documentation.
  • Proficiency in welding processes including MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), FCAW, and SMAW.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, weld joint design, and distortion control.
  • Proficient with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for installation and startup support.
