DIRECT Lab Research Internships and Instructional/Teaching

DIRECT Lab Research Assistants Needed

ACA Variable position

US Work Authorization is required

The DIRECT Lab at Utah State University is expanding. We are currently seeking driven individuals for two distinct tracks: Research Internships and Instructional/Teaching Positions.

If you thrive in a high-bandwidth environment that operates at the intersection of advanced robotics, maritime AI, and cutting-edge hardware, we want to hear from you.

Track 1: Research Internship Positions

We are looking for builders and researchers to join our 35+ person team across three primary domains:

  • Humanoid Robotics & RL: Implementation and testing on Unitree platforms. Focus on locomotion, multi-agent coordination, and reinforcement learning environments.
  • Maritime Domain Intelligence: Supporting the ongoing missions. You’ll work on satellite data enhancement for fishing vessel detection and maritime security (expanding on our spacecraft initiatives).
  • Hardware-Native AI & Tracking: Researching architectures and developing simulations / digital-twins.

Track 2: Teaching & Course Development (New Certificate Program)

We are preparing to launch new programs in AI Engineering and Electrified Transportation Topics . We need technical leads to help build the curriculum and prepare instructional materials for the next generation of engineers.

  • Role: Assist in developing "agentic" coding modules, hardware-software integration labs, and AI deployment pipelines.
  • Ideal for: Anyone with a passion for pedagogy and translating complex research into structured, high-impact learning.

Who You Are

  • Agentic: You don’t wait for a ticket to be assigned; you identify the bottleneck and build a solution.
  • Technical: Proficient in Education, Python, PyTorch, or ROS2. Experience with local inference engines (Ollama, etc.) and high-performance computing is a major plus.
  • Collaborative: You can hold your own in a large, multi-disciplinary team of scientists, developers, and PhD students.

Why DIRECT?

Led by faculty with deep roots in industry, the DIRECT Lab moves fast. You’ll have access to world-class infrastructure (including our high-VRAM GPU clusters) and specialized sensing hardware while working on projects with global reach (NASA, DOE, DOD, and more).
