POSITION SUMMARY
The Outdoor Initiatives Assistant supports the delivery of outdoor programming within the Office of Opportunity, Empowerment & People (OEP). This student employee helps create inclusion driven access to outdoor experiences for NMU students. A signature focus of this role is assisting the OEP with the development of outdoor initiatives occurring during the summer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Outdoor Programming Support
- Assist with event programming for OEP’s outdoor focused events.
- Assist with propose outdoor programming opportunities aligned with the office's inclusion mission (hikes, camping, kayaking, 5k, summer activities, etc.)
- Help build relationships with campus and regional partners such as NMU Outdoor Recreation, state parks, and community outdoor organizations
- Assist with grant reporting documentation related to outdoor programming outcomes
- Promote outdoor initiatives through collaboration with OEP office team members.
- Support revitalization efforts through environmental monitoring in collaboration with campus and external partners.
General & Cross-Office Support
- Deliver general office information and represent OEP at campus-wide events
- Support overall Office of Opportunity, Empowerment & People programming and initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Currently enrolled NMU student
- Minimum 2.5 undergraduate cumulative GPA; minimum 3.0 graduate cumulative GPA
- Available 30+ hrs/week during the summer terms.
- Enthusiasm for the outdoors and genuine commitment to expanding access for all students
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with campus partners and community organizations
Preferred
- Experience with event coordination, volunteer management, or outdoor program leadership
- Familiarity with NMU Outdoor Recreation resources and Upper Peninsula outdoor opportunities
- Experience supporting environmental monitoring or Indigenous revitalization efforts
- Wilderness First Aid, CPR, or other relevant safety certifications (or willingness to pursue)
- Experience with grant-funded programs or outcome-based reporting
