Grounds/Horticulture Intern


This hands-on internship offers experience in arboretum collections, natural areas, horticulture, and grounds management. Interns will build practical skills in plant identification, landscape problem-solving, and sustainable maintenance while working with staff and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities & Learning Areas:

Arboretum & Collections

  • Assist with collections management, weeding, and pruning
  • Learn to identify 10 useful woody plants
  • Understand how plants solve common landscape challenges
  • Support watering and irrigation equipment management
  • Identify diseases, pests, and abiotic plant problems

Natural Areas

  • Assist with deer fence management
  • Manage woody invasive species in natural settings
  • Support resident volunteer activities

Horticulture & Gardens

  • Identify 10 common weeds and learn IPM strategies
  • Help manage and work with volunteers
  • Diagnose and solve herbaceous plant problems
  • Learn and present 10 useful garden perennials

Grounds & Landscape Maintenance

  • Assist with resident garden renovations
  • Mulching, weeding, string trimming, and general maintenance
  • Support basic hardscaping tasks
  • Learn turfgrass establishment, renovation, and management

The grounds/horticulture intern will gain hands-on horticultural experience, plant ID skills, exposure to landscape and natural area management, and volunteer coordination experience.
