Role Summary
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Obstetrical Technician serves as a scrub member of the obstetrical/surgical team — assisting with deliveries and surgical procedures, preparing instruments, and maintaining a clean, safe environment. This role also performs clerical and basic patient care duties to support efficient unit operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Surgical Scrub Support — Serve as scrub tech for assigned obstetrical cases; review procedures, assemble trays, set up sterile tables, count instruments/needles/sponges, and pass instruments in anticipation of physician needs
- Delivery & Procedure Prep — Prepare C-section rooms, LDRs, and delivery rooms; assist physicians, CNMs, and nursing staff before, during, and after deliveries
- Room Turnover — Break down rooms following procedures, assist with cleaning, return instruments for sterilization, and restock unused supplies
- Supply & Inventory Management — Check, order, and restock supplies, instruments, and equipment; rotate stock across patient rooms, supply rooms, procedure carts, and utility areas
- Patient Care Support — Answer call lights, obtain vital signs, assist with patient hygiene as directed by an RN or LPN
- Unit Coordination — Answer phones, relay messages, transport specimens, equipment, meal trays, blood products, and pharmacy orders
- Clerical & Documentation — Process orders for lab, X-ray, and diagnostics; enter admissions, transfers, and discharges; transcribe provider orders; maintain patient charts, medication records, and Kardex system
- Fetal Monitoring — Clean, maintain, and operate computers and central fetal monitoring systems
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED
- Experience: 6–12 months of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Practical Nurse (State of Michigan)
- Certified Scrub Technologist or completion of a CST program

- Ability to work under pressure, make quick decisions, and manage multiple priorities in high-stress situations
- High degree of flexibility, patience, and adaptability to shift work
- Proficiency with basic computer skills, order entry, and electronic charting
- Knowledge of patient chart management and medical office procedures
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Regular lifting up to 50 lbs; occasional heavier lifting with assistance
- Sustained alertness and concentration required; computer use 40–70% of the time
