The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provides stewardship over the construction, maintenance and preservation of the Nation's highways, bridges, and tunnels. FHWA also conducts research and provides technical assistance to state and local agencies to improve safety, mobility, and to encourage innovation.

The Office of Safety Technologies (HSST) is one of the two offices in the FHWA Office of Safety.

HSST's mission and key functions:

  • Reduces frequency and severity of crashes through implementation of proven, emerging, and innovative highway safety infrastructure technologies.
  • Focuses on engineering solutions for roadway departure, intersection, and pedestrian crashes representing close to 90 percent of national traffic fatalities.
  • Promotes proven safety countermeasures, strategies, and innovations that impact highway safety performance.
  • Enhances state and national data-driven decision-making.
  • Coordinates with FHWA Office of Operations on initiatives related to the Manual on Uniformed Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for Streets and Highways and work zone safety.

As the Team Leader for Safety Design and Operations, you won't just manage tasks - you will lead a geographically dispersed team of experts to develop strategies, methodologies, and performance standards that save lives.

As a Lead Transportation Specialist, you will:

  • Lead and Inspire: Communicate our strategic mission and vision to the team, integrating our core values into every work product and service.
  • Innovative Roadway Safety: Develop strategies and noteworthy practices for state, tribal, and local agencies to improve safety outcomes.
  • Strategic Oversight: Manage budgets, strategic planning, and day-to-day operations with high-level autonomy.
  • Expert Consultation: Serve as a primary advisor to FHWA Headquarters, field offices, and Federal partners to resolve complex issues

The ideal candidate for this position has a strong analytical mindset and the leadership skills to guide a professional team.

Prior supervisory experience isn't required, but the ability to inspire excellence is essential!

Additionally, the ideal candidate must be an effective communicator who can distill intricate technical details into clear executive summaries and public-facing content that drives awareness.
