Transportation Engineer 9-12/Transportation Engineering Licensed Specialist 13 (Bdg Inspection Eng)

This position is responsible for performing bridge inspections within the Big Bridge Inventory under the direction of a Qualified Team Leader (QTL). Inspections are completed within an assigned area. Inspections are done in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and other state laws and guidelines. This position also is responsible for participating in the bridge safety inspection Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) monitoring program and assisting with evaluating structures in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the specialist (13) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

NOTE: We may consider applicants that will be obtaining a bachelor’s degree by May 31, 2026

Experience

Transportation Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Transportation Engineer 10
One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.

Transportation Engineer P11
Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.

Transportation Engineer 12
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to
a Transportation Engineer P11.

Transportation Engineer Licensed Specialist 13
Four years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.

 

Alternate Education and Experience

 

  • Transportation Engineer 9 - 12

Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.

To be considered for this position Transportation Engineer Licensed Specialist 13 position, you must: 

  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Medical Examiners Certificate as a condition of employment. 

Possess status as a Qualified Team Leader which includes:

  • Successful completion of NHI-130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course. 
  • Successful completion of 18 hours of approved bridge inspection recurrent training over the last five years. 
  • Successful completion of the Field Proficiency Exam in the last two years. 
  • Successful completion of NHI-130078 Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges.
