Summer 2026 | Library Research Coach

Texas State University Library Peer Research Coach 

Direct Supervisor: Donna Dean

Payrate: $12/hr

Overview

The Library Research Coaches will provide research assistance through a virtual chat service and via individual in-person and virtual research consultations. Research Coaches will receive ongoing training and professional development. This service-oriented position offers the opportunity to develop advanced information, interpersonal, reference, and presentation skills. 
Research Coaches are responsible for a variety of tasks, including, but not limited to:

Representing Texas State University Library and providing library research help for students, faculty, and staff via online chat and in-person research consultations, which includes:

  • Providing basic library information to patrons
  • Performing searches for materials via library catalogs and databases
  • Providing informal tutorials on the use of library resources 
  • Performing other duties as assigned which include but are not limited to campus events and outreach, training and conference sessions, and instruction assistance

  • Ability to work independently and feel comfortable asking questions

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous employment in service-oriented positions (restaurants, retail, etc.)
  • Successfully completed undergraduate English 1320 and 1310 course
  • Prior tutoring experience
  • Knowledge of library catalogs and databases

Additional Research Coaching responsibilities

  • Acquiring further expertise in research assistance skills 
  • Assisting in the design and delivery of training to future Research Coaches
  • Maintaining online chat documentation 
  • Working with supervisors to maintain selected resources and support the smooth functioning of library services.

Employee Evaluation Process

Research Coaches will have an annual review where job performance is discussed. The evaluations will be conducted on performance of duties, attitude, job-related issues and problems, and the willingness to accept additional responsibilities.
