Web Content & Accessibility Assistant

Position Title: Web Content & Accessibility Assistant

Classification: Temporary Student Employee

Employment Type: Temporary / Seasonal (Summer)

Employment Period: 5/10/2026 – 8/21/2026

Hours Per Week: Up to 35 hours per week and determined by student availability; flexible

Compensation: $13.73 per hour

Department: Institutional Effectiveness

Reports To: Jason Nicholas – Assistant Provost and Director of Institutional Effectiveness and University Strategic Planning

Work Location: On-site

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of Jason Nicholas and Institutional Effectiveness team, the Web Content & Accessibility Assistant provides temporary support for the maintenance, content management, and accessibility compliance of the Institutional Effectiveness web pages. The incumbent will work primarily within the Drupal content management system (CMS) and will contribute to efforts that ensure the website maintained, updated, and will meet accessibility standards and provides an inclusive user experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Website Maintenance & Content Management

  • Update and maintain website content using the Drupal CMS, including creating, editing, and publishing pages, articles, and media assets.
  • Assist with site audits to identify outdated, broken, or inconsistent content and recommend corrections.
  • Upload and format images, documents, and multimedia content in accordance with established style and accessibility guidelines.
  • Assist with testing and quality assurance for website updates.

Web Accessibility (training to be provided)

  • Review website content and structure for compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA conformance level.
  • Identify and document accessibility issues such as missing alternative text, poor color contrast, inaccessible forms, or improper heading hierarchy.
  • Remediate identified accessibility barriers within Drupal and coordinate with the supervisor on issues requiring technical intervention.
  • Add descriptive alternative text to images and ensure documents are accessible prior to publication.

Administrative & Collaborative Support

  • Communicate progress, issues, and recommendations to the supervisor and/or office team on a regular basis.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to planning discussions related to web projects.
  • Document processes and create or update internal guides for common content management or accessibility tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student at Northern Michigan University (either enrolled in Summer Courses or Fall Courses)
  • Undergraduate with GPA greater than or equal to 2.0 / Graduate with GPA greater than or equal to 3.0
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify errors in content and formatting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hands-on experience with Drupal 9 or 10.
  • Undergraduate student enrolled in a minimum of eight credit hours / four credit hours for graduate students for the summer semester

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary, part-time position for the summer term only and does not carry an expectation of continued employment.
  • Work will be performed using the student’s laptop computer for extended periods.
  • All work must comply with organizational policies, including those relating to information security and data privacy.
