PUB Ramp Up Academic Mentor

JOB SUMMARY: RAMP UP ACADEMIC MENTORS

 

PURPOSE: Facilitate academic and social learning of high school participants by assisting teachers in the classroom, providing individual and group tutoring, and modeling behaviors consistent with PUB’s standards.

                                                                                                                                                                          

DATES: Exact dates vary each year, but generally begin near the middle of June and end in August

                                                                                                           

DAYS/HOURS OF WORK:  Classes:  Tuesday, 7:45 a.m. – noon and 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and  Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – noon and 1:00 p.m.– 3:30 p.m.  Friday, 7:45 – 10:15 am.  Academic Mentors assigned to escort scholars to lunch will have their break afterward.  Mentor work hours may vary based on scheduling.

 

SUMMER COMPENSATION:    $15.00/hour   (including training)

 

SUPERVISORS: Academic Coordinator (AC) & Teacher                    POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 2

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Serve as a mentoring coach for “Ramp Up Buddies” (Rubies) and meet with them twice weekly for training.
  • Be present at each class session.  Take attendance.  Be assertive in assisting the teacher to implement lesson plans and maintain the learning environment both in-person and virtually as situations dictate. 
  • Assist with acquisition, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.  As requested, assist with the grading and recording of grades and constructive comments (manual and/or electronic).
  • Monitor participants’ behavior in all settings during the session and provide appropriate coaching.
  • Remain updated on the instructional schedule, daily lesson plans, and classwork requirements in order to facilitate classwork and provide individual tutoring.  Record whether each student’s classwork is completed daily and provide daily updates to the instructor and AC if work is incomplete.
  • Escort participants between classrooms, the cafeteria, the main or satellite office, and various buildings for classes.
  • Participate in meetings with the teachers and Administrative Team as scheduled.
  • Assist with presenting graduation certificates.
  • Chaperone the educational day trip at the end of the Ramp Up.
  • May include light clerical.  Other duties as assigned by teachers or Administrative Team.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Good academic standing and an appropriate level of maturity.
  • Grade Point Average: 3.00 in subject that you wish to tutor; 2.50 overall.
  • Extracurricular activities that demonstrate the use of good leadership, communication, and social skills.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office, Windows, Internet) including virtual learning.  Light clerical skills.
  • Previous experience working with ethnically diverse students (preferably high school ages).
  • Commitment to helping students prepare for college.

 

HIGH SCHOOL SUBJECT AREAS NEEDED.  SKILL COMBINATIONS ARE A PLUS:

  • Mathematics, Science, English, Financial Literacy, Computer Literacy
