CMMS Implementation Intern
Michigan Milk Producers Association is seeking an ambitious intern this summer. Our mission is to market our members’ milk to the greatest advantage possible. Founded in 1916, this dairy cooperative focuses on providing stability and value to its producer-members in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin, while focusing on sustainability, quality, and community.
Position Summary
We are seeking highly motivated and detail-oriented Summer Interns to play a foundational role in implementing Fluke eMaint, a leading Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), at our facilities in Remus, Ovid, and Constantine, Michigan.
This internship offers a rare opportunity to help build a complete CMMS program from scratch. You will apply industry best practices to establish clean asset data, preventive maintenance programs, optimized spare parts inventory, standardized workflows, and integrated safety procedures. Your contributions will create the backbone for improved equipment reliability, reduced downtime, better inventory control, and enhanced safety compliance across our operations.
This is an excellent hands-on role for students who want to gain real-world experience in maintenance systems implementation, reliability engineering, and operational excellence in a manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Following CMMS implementation best practices, the intern will:
- Asset Hierarchy & Register Development: Build a clean, well-structured equipment asset list. This includes collecting nameplate data, creating logical asset hierarchies (plant → area → system → equipment), assigning unique asset IDs using standardized naming conventions, and verifying information through field walks and existing records.
- Preventive Maintenance Program Build: Create and load detailed PM tasks, schedules, frequencies, and procedures into Fluke eMaint. Leverage existing MP2 CMMS data, Excel spreadsheets, OEM manuals, and technical documentation, while applying best practices such as manufacturer-recommended intervals, criticality-based prioritization, and condition-based maintenance where applicable.
- Spare Parts Inventory Optimization: Establish a professional inventory management system by conducting physical counts, reconciling warehouse stock against critical spares lists, researching historical failure rates and usage data, analyzing lead times, and setting accurate min/max stocking levels using criticality and ABC analysis principles.
- Safety Integration (LOTO & Procedures): Assist the Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) team in developing and loading Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, safety instructions, and permitting requirements into eMaint so they are automatically attached to relevant work orders.
- Workflow & Process Configuration: Work with maintenance teams and project leaders to design and configure efficient work order workflows, approval processes, notification rules, and reporting structures in eMaint following industry standards for planning, scheduling, and execution.
- Data Quality & Cleansing: Perform thorough data cleansing, standardization, and migration support from legacy systems (MP2, Excel, paper records) into the new eMaint platform.
-
Testing & Documentation: Support system testing, develop quick-reference guides, and help create training materials for end users.
Best Practices You Will Apply
Throughout the internship, you will help implement proven CMMS rollout methodologies, including:
- Starting with accurate asset and spare parts data as the foundation
- Using a phased, structured approach (assets → PMs → inventory → workflows)
- Emphasizing data standardization and naming conventions
- Integrating safety and reliability best practices from day one
- Focusing on usability and adoption for long-term success
Qualifications
Required:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (rising juniors and seniors preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Occupational Safety, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, OEM documentation, and safety procedures.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, data validation, filters, etc.).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred:
- Any previous exposure to manufacturing, maintenance, inventory control, or safety programs.
- Experience with CMMS platforms (especially MP2), data organization projects, or process improvement.
What You Will Gain
- End-to-end, practical experience implementing a CMMS from the ground up using Fluke eMaint.
- Deep understanding of maintenance and reliability best practices, including asset management, PM optimization, inventory rationalization, and safety integration.
- Direct collaboration with maintenance, reliability, and HSE teams.
- A substantial, portfolio-worthy project demonstrating tangible contributions to operational setup and digital transformation.
Work Location & Schedule
- Fully on-site at one of the three locations (Remus, Ovid, or Constantine).
- Standard daytime hours, Monday – Friday
