DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
EMPLOYER: Academy Board
REPORTS TO: Academy Director
JOB FUNCTION: To provide for the needs of special needs students in accordance with written Individualized Educational Programs (“IEP”), the school curriculum, and the Operational Policies of the Academy Board.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Shall hold a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate and hold an earned Master's Degree in Special Education. Except as otherwise provided by law, the Academy shall use certificated teachers according to state board rule.
- Director of special education approval/certification.
- Shall be eligible for or hold a valid endorsement as a Teacher Consultant.
- Shall have a minimum of three years teaching experience inclusive of two years of experience with special needs students.
- Certification to administer the WJR-111 Test of Achievement.
All administrators or other person whose primary responsibility is administering instructional programs or as a chief business official shall meet the certification and continuing education requirements as described in MCL 380.1246.
MINIMUM GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to provide leadership in educational planning for special needs students in a resource room setting.
- Ability to organize and develop educational plans for special needs students.
- Ability to interpret and evaluate standardized student achievement data.
- Ability to function effectively in a management team for the planning and placement of special needs students.
- Ability to conduct meaningful evaluations of staff with accompanying suggestions for improvements and professional development.
- Ability to facilitate the inclusion of special education into the mission and vision of Holly Academy.
- Ability to complete all special education MOE/Oakland Schools/CMU reporting requirements.
- Knowledge of the growth and maturation patterns of elementary and secondary school students.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Subject to a Criminal Records Check as required by Academy Board Policy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer the child study program to maximize Academy resources as a prerequisite to special education placement.
- Assist with the development and assessment of curriculum programs and materials for special needs students.
- Serve as a resource and consultant to regular classroom and specials teachers on matters pertaining to student behavior and related instructional techniques.
- Coordinate instructional program curriculum for special needs students with the regular classroom teacher.
- Promote student success by providing learning activities at the correct level of difficulty for all students in the resource room.
- Routinely conduct student assessments of intended learning outcomes, reteaching as necessary based on assessment results.
- Coordinate the resource room services, inclusive of Speech and Language Therapy, School Psychological services, Occupational Therapy services, and Social Work services.
- Organize, prepare, and coordinate all IEP and Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team meetings, inclusive of those required by Oakland ISD and the Academy's authorizing agency.
- Serve as the Academy's 504 Plan Coordinator.
- Prepare and submit appropriate grant requests to enhance the services of the Special Education Department.
- Supervise and evaluate certified and non-certified staff in the Special Education Department toward achieving school improvement and strategic goals and objectives, as well as IEP goals.
- Supervise and evaluate special education teachers.
- Oversee elementary student discipline.
- Assist the Academy Director in the recruitment and selection of personnel.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Academy Director.

SALARY:
Negotiable based on experience.
