Communication Coordinator
Position Overview
The Communications Coordinator will support Michael Bahry during his exploratory “testing the waters” phase for a potential independent candidacy for the United States Senate from Rhode Island. This hands-on role focuses on building early visibility, assisting with media relationships, amplifying Bahry’s message of peace, independence, term limits, and support for Rhode Island families, and handling a variety of communications and outreach tasks. The ideal candidate is a strategic, ethical communicator who is proficient in using AI tools to increase efficiency and quality of work while thriving in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Media Relations & Outreach
• Assist with distribution and follow-up on the press release announcing Bahry’s exploration of a U.S. Senate run.
• Help build and maintain relationships with Rhode Island print, digital, broadcast, and community media outlets.
• Support pitching stories, responding to media inquiries, and coordinating interviews, op-eds, and press opportunities.
• Content Creation & Messaging
• Draft press releases, statements, talking points, and op-eds using both traditional writing skills and AI tools (such as Grok, ChatGPT, or Claude) to accelerate first drafts and improve efficiency.
• Refine and edit AI-generated content to ensure it accurately reflects Bahry’s authentic voice, values of mercy and justice, and core campaign themes.
• Public Engagement & Scheduling
• Schedule and coordinate speaking events, community appearances, and podcast guest opportunities.
• Prepare briefing materials and Q&A support for media interviews, speaking engagements, and podcast appearances using AI assistance where appropriate.
• Identify and pursue opportunities for Bahry to speak before faith communities, labor groups, housing advocates, peace organizations, and independent voter networks.
• Digital Communications Support
• Provide thoughtful input on social media content to ensure messaging remains consistent and effective.
• Track basic media coverage and engagement metrics.
• Strategic & Team Support
• Advise on communications opportunities during the testing-the-waters period.
• Perform additional duties as needed to support the exploratory effort.
The successful candidate will be a true team player who is flexible, proactive, and willing to take on responsibilities outside the core job description as the needs of this early-stage effort evolve. In a small exploratory team environment, adaptability and a willingness to pitch in wherever help is required are essential.
AI Expectations
The Communications Coordinator is expected to be trained in and actively use generative AI tools as a regular part of their workflow. This includes strong prompt engineering skills to generate high-quality first drafts of press materials, research summaries, briefing documents, and content ideas. All AI-generated material must be carefully reviewed, fact-checked, edited for tone and accuracy, and aligned with Bahry’s authentic voice and values before any public use. AI is viewed as a powerful assistant, not a replacement for human judgment, creativity, and ethical oversight.
Qualifications
• Required
• Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages.
• Demonstrated experience or recent training in the effective use of AI tools (Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or similar) for content creation, research, and communications tasks.
• Experience in media relations, public affairs, journalism, or political/nonprofit communications (entry-level or volunteer experience considered).
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
• Familiarity with the Rhode Island media landscape or local issues is a strong plus.
• Commitment to ethical, transparent communications and alignment with Bahry’s values of peace, independence, and service to families and the vulnerable.
• Preferred
• Background in political or issue-based communications.
• Experience booking speaking engagements or podcast appearances.
• Understanding of FEC “testing the waters” guidelines.
What Success Looks Like
• Positive early media coverage and growing relationships with Rhode Island reporters.
• Increased visibility through speaking events, podcast appearances, and targeted outreach.
• Consistent, on-message public presence that resonates with independent voters.
• Efficient, high-quality work delivered through smart integration of AI tools in a collaborative, flexible team setting.
