Intern – Process Engineer Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Process Engineer Intern to support our ethanol production facility during the summer months. This role will focus heavily on developing and enhancing operational dashboards using PI Vision to improve data visibility, decision-making, and plant performance.

This is a hands-on opportunity for engineering students to gain real-world experience in a fast-paced industrial environment while working closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.

This is a temporary full-time position (May-August, flexible based on school schedule).

JOB RESPONSIBILITES (to include but not limited to):

  • Design, build, and optimize real-time dashboards in PI Vision to monitor plant performance, KPIs, and critical processes
  • Analyze process data trends to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement
  • Collaborate with engineers and operators to determine dashboard needs and ensure usability
  • Support ongoing process improvement initiatives across fermentation, distillation, and utilities systems
  • Assist with data validation, troubleshooting instrumentation signals, and ensuring data accuracy
  • Document dashboard structures, standard work, and user guides for long-term sustainability
  • Participate in daily production meetings and contribute insights from data analysis

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
  • Rising sophomore, junior, or senior preferred
  • Strong interest in manufacturing, process optimization, or industrial operations
  • Experience with data visualization tools (preferred but not required)
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems, PLCs, or data historians (a plus)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with data analysis tools is beneficial
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires adherence to all safety policies and procedures. Work may occur in plant, laboratory, and office environments with exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, dust, chemicals, and varying temperatures.

Physical requirements may include:

  • Climbing stairs and ladders
  • Standing and walking for extended periods
  • Working at heights, in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions
  • Wearing required PPE
