Operations Planning Co-Op (Hybrid)

PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that plays a vital role in the U.S. electric system. PJM ensures the reliability of the largest centrally dispatched control area in North America by coordinating the movement of electricity in all or parts of 13 states. PJM, acting neutrally and independently, operates the largest competitive wholesale electricity market in the world. PJM manages a sophisticated regional planning process for generation and transmission expansion to assure future electric.

A lot has changed since the first electric generator was introduced almost 200 years ago.  Numerous advancements are visible in the 1400+ generators within PJM encompassing different technology types including nuclear, renewables, fossil, and batteries.   The consistent growth brings many complexities and that's where PJM's Generation Department comes in.   The team is responsible for maintaining and improving some of the most critical business functions within the organization.  We’re looking for highly motivated individuals who have experience/interest in the industry to join our multi-functional team, which covers areas ranging from technical data analysis to interpersonal interactions with customers.

The Transmission Operations department will be leading coordination and analysis of an unprecedented number of transmission outages in a concentrated area over the next five years.  These outages will be needed due to a very large number of necessary transmission system upgrades that have been approved to accommodate increasing data center loads and critical unit retirements. We are in the early stages of creating a new analysis process for a time horizon that was not previously needed. This means that our group will need to learn new tools and processes and perform this new analysis IN ADDITION to the analysis they already perform for established time horizons. Having a co-op to help with the outage coordination and analysis would be extremely valuable.

The Transmission Service Department is responsible for the FERC Open Access requirements associated with the transfer of power into, out of and through the PJM system.  Areas of support and responsibility include compliance to FERC, NERC and NAESB standards, the calculation of available transfer capability, reservation of transmission service and scheduling of interchange.  The co-op student would assist with the testing of the applications that support these processes (ATC, OASIS and ExSchedule), maintaining the quality of data associated with monitored system flowgates, mapping of flowgates between models, adherence to compliance requirements and contributing to the industry model used to determine ATC.

Outage Analysis Technologies mission is to enhance workforce effectiveness in support of Operations Planning, Operations, PJM and its members, with a focus around automation enhancements in the area of Operational Planning Analysis and advanced alarming tools. OAT has co-op needs that focus largely around support for the eDART Operations lifecycle and work-order management tool, eDART’s nearly twenty sub-applications, and the multi-year refresh project around the tool. OAT provides software development team opportunities, catering to the interests and abilities of the individual student.
