Senior Field Staff Management Intern [Graduate Students]

The Field Staff Management Intern / Co-Op will support the Director and Managers of Field Staff in their day-to-day activities supporting the Field Staff team of Resident Engineers and Construction Inspectors. The Intern / Co-Op will be required to be highly responsive and able to prioritize departmental needs in the best interest of the MBTA.

 

We are looking to hire two (2) interns, who will work at least 4 - 5 days onsite (40 hours per week) for between three to six months.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • Assist Manager of Field Staff with day-to-day management of 40+ Resident Engineers and 70+ Construction Inspectors.
  • Track daily absences, FMLA, and PFML using Excel spreadsheets and Outlook calendar.
  • Improve efficiency by automating repetitive and redundant tasks.
  • Deliver innovative solutions to dynamic problems.
  • Assist in tracking weekly and monthly report submissions from Resident Engineers and Construction Inspectors.
  • Monitor safety certificate completion for entire team.
  • Assist Managers of Field Staff in preparing documentation for meetings and taking minutes.
  • Participate in weekly safety inspection "walk-downs."
  • Submit support tickets on e-Builder (Project Management Information System) as needed.
  • Assist Resident Engineers and Construction Inspectors on E-builder (Project Management Information System) tasks.
  • Track and manage team compliance deadlines.
  • Maintain and streamline Field Staff Management SharePoint sites.
  • Lead daily Transportation Construction Inspector intern stand-up meetings and report daily updates to Manager of Field Staff.
  • Create and deliver weekly presentations to Manager of Field Staff.
  • Work cross-functionally with other Capital Support teams to coordinate efforts.
  • Work closely with Construction Quality Assurance and Change Order teams.
  • Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities may include focusing on one or more departments or locations. See applicable addendums or hiring manager for department or location specific functions. 
  • Provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experience.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Education 

 

  • Enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in a graduate / master’s degree program of an accredited college / university in Engineering, Project Management, or related program.

 

Minimum Experience and Required Skills

  • Up to two (2) years of engineering and / or project management experience, including internships / co-ops.
  • Completion of at least one year (minimum 27 credit hours) of college coursework in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Environmental Sciences / Technology, Construction Management, Construction Supervision, Engineering Management, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Transportation Planning, Mathematics, Physical Science, Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Technology, Landscape Architecture, Surveying, Physics, Geology or Forestry.
  • Above average organizational, analytical, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Above average proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and database applications.
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner.
  • Above average ability to communicate effectively in English, both in written and oral forms.
  • Highly organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
  • Strong interest in public service, transit, or transportation and how it operates.
  • Above average ability to work effectively in diverse, collaborative, fast-paced environments as well as independently.
  • Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply). The MBTA does not provide visa sponsorship, such as H1-B status.

Preferred Experience and Skills

 

  • Experience with Adobe suite, GIS, and CAD software.
  • At least one construction season (minimum of three months) of work experience in highway, bridge, or other civil engineering related construction inspection, as described in Tasks and Duties.
