THE POSITION
The City of Dublin is seeking an Intern for the Public Works Department to support a variety of management and program-oriented tasks. The intern will be assigned various tasks in the areas of engineering, project management, administrative, GIS and general daily activities.

The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented, organized, and possess strong analytical skills. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities are essential, as the intern will collaborate with various divisions and stakeholders. The ideal candidate should have a willingness to learn, adapt to challenges, and use this opportunity to understand how the city department’s function.
This internship is best suited for someone pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS, data management, and research methodologies will be advantageous.
In addition to the essential duties listed in the job specification, the successful candidate may also be expected to perform duties including, but not limited to, the following:
- Assist with developing and cataloguing cash and surety bonds for various encroachment and sitework permits in Public Works.
- Assist with archiving permanent records related to tracts/subdivisions to our Laserfiche.
- Research recently accepted developments or tracts, update the City of Dublin Traffic Code, and verify existing parking restrictions and regulations.
- Assist with the review of the Engineering and Traffic Survey’s, required by California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), to justify the posted speed limits along various street sections citywide.
- Assist with reviewing and updating the City’s database that houses historical Average Daily Traffic (ADT) and Intersection Turning Movement (ITM) counts.
- Implement the initial steps to replace two play structures which will include a project scope, receive proposals for design services, prepare a project schedule, and research procurement options for the replacement of two play structures.
- Assist with completing paper towel dispenser replacements at City facilities by identifying where they are located and a plan to replace them with controlled dispensing systems.
- Update the City’s irrigation controller data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and GPS field-based technology.
- Develop a comprehensive visual database of City of Dublin construction and improvement projects, including Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and/or non-CIP projects.
- Assist with linking related Laserfiche documents including plans, construction records, and agreement documents to storm drain GIS data.
- Assist in locating any missing Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD) meters and link the locations of the meters to the parks and facilities within GIS.
- Research and propose a numbering system for pedestrian lights at various City parks.
- Research best practices for rodent control in city parks and open spaces, including consulting with other jurisdictions, reviewing existing strategies, and developing recommendations for effective, environmentally responsible solutions.
Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to education and experience is likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Have achieved at least Senior status in a four-year degree program or enrolled in a graduate program. Academic course work should be related to city government such as: public administration, planning, civil engineering, business, criminal justice, recreation or a related field.
Experience: Experience or course work in city government, public administration and/or general office practices is desirable but not required.
