About the Position:
This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to work in Materials R&D on next-generation sealing systems for electronic paper displays. The intern will own a focused project to evaluate material interactions between polymer films and fluid formulations that impact coating and device performance.
The role emphasizes experimental design, surface characterization, and data-driven analysis using lab-scale methods. The intern will work closely with scientists and engineers while independently driving their project and presenting results at the end of the internship.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and compound polymer formulations using lab-scale mixing tools (e.g. balances and mixers)
- Support qualification of hand fill-and-seal (HFS) equipment, including basic repeatability assessment (e.g., Gauge R&R)
- Perform surface and interfacial characterization, including surface energy of films, surface tension of fluids, and adhesion testing between material layers
- Conduct microscopy and visual analysis to evaluate film quality, interfacial behavior, and coating defects
- Execute designed experiments (DOE) to screen material combinations
- Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data
- Present findings, correlations, and recommendations to the team
- Always maintain safe laboratory practices
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Comfortable working in a laboratory environment
- Strong interest in materials, coatings, or surface science
- Basic data analysis skills (Excel; Python is a plus)
- Good communication and organizational skills
Benefits:
The anticipated base pay for this position is $30-40 per hour, DOE, for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Medical plan that begins on the first day
