About Us

Founded in 1989, Book’em has been a leader in Nashville’s literacy movement, working to eliminate disparities in book access that can hinder academic and personal success for economically disadvantaged children. Literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning, yet too many children in our community grow up without access to books or the resources they need to thrive.

Book’em addresses this gap by providing free, high-quality books and engaging literacy experiences to more than 22,000 children annually across Davidson County. Through five programs—Books for Nashville Kids, Reading is Fundamental, Book Bus, Ready for Reading, and Read Me Day—Book'em has become the largest provider of free books to Nashville children ages 0-18. Since our founding, we’ve distributed over 1.5 million books. As a nonprofit, we’re supported by enthusiastic volunteers, community partners, donors, and team members who believe deeply in the transformative power of reading.

Position Overview

We're seeking a creative, organized, and motivated Storytelling & Social Media Intern to support Book’em’s communications through engaging, mission-driven content. This role is primarily focused on strengthening and expanding Book’em’s social media presence through consistent, on‑brand content. The intern will enhance existing photos and assets with graphics, text, and storytelling, while also capturing new photo and video content that helps show the people, processes, and behind‑the‑scenes work that make our programs possible.

While social media is the primary focus, the intern may also provide occasional design support for Book’em’s programs and communications, such as branded print pieces or internal visuals. This internship is ideal for someone who enjoys visual storytelling, photography, and digital content creation, and who is comfortable using design tools to bring stories to life. You’ll take ownership of real projects, see your work shared publicly, and graduate with hands-on experience in nonprofit communications.

The Graphic Design Intern focuses on creating print and digital design materials that support fundraising and development efforts in close collaboration with Book’em’s Development team, while the Storytelling & Social Media Intern focuses on strengthening social media content through visual storytelling and content creation.

  • Improve existing photo content by adding graphics, text, and branding elements to create stronger, more engaging social posts
  • Assist with the design of print and digital materials such as mini‑brochures, program one‑pagers, and organizational charts as needed
  • Adapt existing templates and assets for use across social and print materials
  • Support brand consistency across all visual content
  • Collaborate with team members on content planning and creative projects while contributing fresh design ideas

Qualifications

  • Currently a junior or senior enrolled in graphic design, digital media, communications, or a related program
  • Experience creating content for social media platforms
  • Ability to capture and edit both photo and video content for on-brand digital and print use
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite, with required experience using Canva for final, editable deliverables (all final designs must be saved in Canva for future staff edits)
  • Strong portfolio or work samples demonstrating creative thinking and visual storytelling skills
  • Solid grasp of design principles including typography, color theory, and layout
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling and audience engagement
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working collaboratively
  • Interest in literacy, education, or community impact
  • Bonus: experience with photography, analytics, or social media scheduling tools

What You'll Gain

  • Real-world experience in nonprofit storytelling and social media strategy
  • A portfolio of published digital and print content
  • Hands‑on experience with photography, design, and digital content creation
