English Teacher, Upper School

Position Summary: This position involves teaching English classes to students in grade 9 (course emphasis is hero figures in literature), grade 10 (course emphasis in American literature), and/or grade 11 (course emphasis is British literature). This position begins August 1, 2026.
Specific Duties Include:
- Writing and carrying out a program of study prescribed in the English curriculum, including both American and British literature
- Creating a learning environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and learning styles of the students
- Having a thorough knowledge of grammar and understanding its importance to the class and to student writing
- Managing student behavior in a manner that optimizes the learning environment
- Maintaining regular communication with students and their parents regarding progress
- Working cooperatively with other grade-level teachers to develop instructional materials that are most appropriate for meeting curricular objectives
- Displaying a willingness to follow school and departmental procedures and regulations
- All other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy
- Competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet
- A solid understanding of learning challenges as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support students’ needs
- Strong organizational and classroom management skills
Minimum Job Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in English or English Education from an accredited institution of higher learning; master’s degree in English or education preferred
- 3+ years of successful teaching high school English preferred
- Independent school experience preferred, but not required
The Teacher, Upper School English position is an exempt, salaried, ten month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Benefits are substantial.
