GIS Vegetation Management Intern

GIS Vegetation Management Intern – Summer 2026

Matern Staffing is now accepting resumes for a GIS Vegetation Management Intern with a public utility company for Summer 2026. In this role you’ll support the department responsible for overseeing utility forestry programs, ensuring safe and reliable electric service through vegetation clearance, mapping and GIS support, coordination with contractors, and member communication. From the office to the field, your forestry/environmental background and eagerness to learn will build smarter vegetation strategies that protect both people and power.

This is a paid summer internship from early June to mid-August with approximately 20-30 hours a week. Work may include both office-based and field-based assignments.

Salary:

  • $15-$20/hr

Schedule:

  • 20-30 hours/week, on-site

What You’ll Do as an Intern:

  • Support mapping and GIS tasks for vegetation management projects
  • Collect tree and plant survey plot data collection for use in a database
  • Collect sample plot data related to integrated vegetation management activities (IVM)Scan, organize, and maintain vegetation management documents
  • Learn foundational utility forestry practices, workflows, and decision-making
  • Shadow field operations (contingent on vehicle insurance approval)
  • Collaborate with Vegetation Management staff and cross-departmental teams
  • Work up to one week shadowing team members across Customer Engineering, Operations and Customer Service
  • Support administrative and project tasks as needed

What You’ll Need:

  • Current undergraduate student in Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related major
  • Basic GIS knowledge
  • Strong communication, research, and organizational skills
  • Plant and tree identification skills
  • Interest in utility forestry and vegetation management practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including spending extended hours working alone in the field in all weather conditions
  • Ability to pass background check, credit check and drug screen
