Construction Management Intern

Position Details

  • Location: Illinois (project-specific sites)
  • Schedule: Full-time or part-time internship (seasonal, typically summer or semester-based)
  • Compensation: Hourly (based on experience and education level)


Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Construction Management/Inspection Intern to support field and office operations on transportation infrastructure projects throughout Illinois. This role provides hands-on experience assisting with construction inspection, documentation, and coordination activities in alignment with major construction project standards and specifications.

This is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing careers in construction management, civil engineering, or related fields to gain real-world exposure to roadway, bridge, and transit construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist construction inspectors and project engineers with daily field inspection activities on roadway, bridge, and infrastructure projects
  • Observe and document contractor work to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and standards
  • Maintain accurate field records including daily reports, quantities, photos, and inspection logs
  • Support measurement and documentation of installed materials and completed work for pay quantities
  • Assist with monitoring construction schedules and identifying potential delays or issues
  • Participate in field testing and inspection of materials (e.g., concrete, asphalt, soils) under supervision
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and project stakeholders as directed
  • Review project drawings, specifications, and shop drawings to understand scope of work
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards and promote a culture of jobsite safety
  • Perform general administrative and project support tasks as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing Degrees or Certifications in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field
  • Basic understanding of construction methods, materials, and terminology
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (may be required for travel to job sites)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or exposure to transportation or highway construction
  • Familiarity with IDOT standards and procedures (not required but a plus)
  • Experience with construction documentation or fieldwork (internships, labs, or coursework)
  • OSHA 10 certification (or willingness to obtain)

Work Environment

  • Combination of field and office work, with the majority of time spent on active construction sites
  • Exposure to outdoor conditions including heat, cold, noise, and construction equipment
  • May require standing, walking, climbing, and lifting moderate weights
