Invasive Species Student Aid
This position serves as support to MDARD’s Pest Detection, Diagnostic, and Response Unit.
• Literature reviews on selected invasive species on concern.
• Utilize the USDA Weed Risk Assessment Tool to identify species that pose the greatest risk of being invasive in the state of Michigan (training will be provided).
• Utilize ArcGIS to make Geographic Potential Maps for species evaluated using the USDA Weed Risk Assessment Tool (training will be provided).
• Support for the team with projects, tasks, and operational projects as needed.
• Maximum of 719 hours per year and 129 hours per month
• Workdays are M-F, hours are flexible • For travel, mileage and meals will be reimbursed
This position serves as support to MDARD’s Pest Detection, Diagnostic, and Response Unit. This position supports the Invasive Species Program Specialist in carrying out key goals in Michigan's Invasive Species Program (MISP). This position will evaluate the invasive potential of aquatic and terrestrial plant species of concern utilizing the USDA Weed Risk Assessment Tool. Prevention of the introduction of invasive species before they arrive in Michigan is the most cost-effective invasive species strategy. The species that pose the greatest risk must be identified through risk assessments and their pathways to introduction monitored and blocked when possible. This position will provide assistance to PDDR staff with projects, tasks, and operational needs as requested to support unit objectives.
Preferred Education and Experience: Currently enrolled in post-secondary educational institution with a major in a biological science or agriculture-related field (e.g. biology, microbiology, entomology, plant pathology, medical technology, clinical laboratory sciences, or a related pure or applied science).
College courses completed that include scientific research and writing preferred.
This position requires the candidate be enrolled or accepted in a post-secondary educational institution and it is preferred that the candidate has a valid driver’s license
