Position:         Classroom Assistant Intern 

Program:        New American Program

Status:                Full-time, Non-Exempt

Reports to:        Community Education Coordinator

Location:         Springfield, MA

The Classroom Assistant Intern plays an important role in JFSWM’s Learning and Employment Program, assisting with classroom operations, instructional activities, and client engagement. This internship provides hands-on experience in adult education, refugee services, and nonprofit programming, offering opportunities to develop professional skills while making a meaningful impact in the lives of immigrants and refugees.  

Responsibilities:

  1. Classroom Operations and Support:
    • Assist with classroom set-up and clean up
    • Ensure and maintain accurate attendance records
    • Prepare, print, and organize instructional materials as directed
    • Ensure classroom resources and supplies are stocked and organized
    • Provide childminding support when needed
  2. Instructional Support
    • Support clients during class activities, providing individualized assistance as needed
    • Conduct initial English language assessments with new clients to determine placement and learning needs
    • Provide occasional one-on-one or small group tutoring under supervision
  3. Administrative and Program Support:
    • Help with data entry, maintaining accurate records of client interactions, program attendance, and other relevant data
  4. Team Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with program staff and volunteers to deliver high-quality services and achieve program goals
    • Other tasks as directed by the Assistant Director, Refugee Self-Sufficiency, Employment Coordinator, and Community Education Coordinator

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Fluent in English, proficiency in at least one other language preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, particularly refugees or immigrants, and sensitivity to cultural differences.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and willingness to learn new software programs.
