Role Overview

CrunchTutor.com is building a selective research mentorship program for highly motivated high school students interested in structured, academically grounded research in areas such as AI/ML, Bioinformatics / Medical Data, and Statistics / Data Science.

We are seeking faculty, postdoctoral scholars, PhD candidates, lecturers, and academically accomplished subject-matter experts to serve as Research Advisors for small student cohorts. This is a premium, light-touch advisory role designed for individuals who can help shape meaningful student research experiences while maintaining academic rigor and realistic project scope.

Projects will be based on public datasets, literature review, and data-driven analysis. This is not a weekly teaching-heavy tutoring role. Instead, Research Advisors will provide high-level intellectual guidance, milestone review, and feedback on research design, methodology, and final deliverables such as papers, posters, or submission-ready drafts.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as a Research Advisor for a small cohort of high school students supported by an intermediate mentor
  • Help refine broad student interests into focused, feasible, and academically meaningful research questions
  • Provide guidance on research design, literature framing, methodology, and interpretation of findings
  • Participate in an initial kickoff session with the cohort
  • Join milestone review sessions approximately every 4–6 weeks
  • Provide high-level feedback on the direction of the final paper, poster, or presentation
  • Offer submission and publication guidance, where appropriate
  • Help ensure projects remain rigorous, ethical, and realistic within the program timeline
  • Collaborate lightly with the weekly mentor, who will manage regular sessions and day-to-day student support

Areas of Interest

We are especially interested in candidates with backgrounds in one or more of the following:

  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computational Biology
  • Public Health / Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics
  • Statistics / Data Science
  • Health Informatics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Medical Data Analysis
  • Quantitative Social or Behavioral Science

Approximate Time Commitment

This is intended to be a light-touch advisory role.

A typical cohort commitment may include:

  • 1 kickoff session
  • 1 milestone review session every 4–6 weeks
  • limited async feedback on research direction, methods, or final draft

Estimated commitment:

  • approximately 1–3 hours per month per cohort, depending on the structure of the engagement

Required Qualifications

  • Current or recent affiliation with a university, research lab, medical school, or comparable academic institution
  • Strong subject-matter expertise in a relevant scientific, quantitative, biomedical, or data-driven field
  • Demonstrated research experience through publications, conference presentations, thesis work, or substantial project-based research
  • Ability to guide early-stage research ideas and keep projects academically grounded
  • Strong communication skills and interest in mentoring ambitious high school students
  • Reliable internet connection and comfort with remote collaboration via Zoom

Preferred Qualifications

  • Faculty member, lecturer, postdoctoral scholar, PhD candidate, medical researcher, or advanced graduate researcher
  • Experience advising research, capstone projects, thesis work, or independent study
  • Familiarity with academic publishing, conference submissions, or poster development
  • Ability to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback while maintaining realistic expectations for pre-college students
  • Interest in expanding access to meaningful research mentorship for high school students

Why Join CrunchTutor

  • 100% remote and flexible
