Purchasing and Supply Chain Manager

The Purchasing and Supply Chain Manager is responsible for overseeing daily procurement activities while steering supply chain management at a strategic level. This role requires a deep understanding of supply chain best practices- including pricing and negotiating, tracking supplier performance and lead times, and procurement reporting. The Supply Chain Manager proactively approaches supplying SMI’s production needs and inventory cadence in support of our mission - Perfect Parts On Time.

 

You will collaborate closely with Sales, Engineering, Production, and Logistics to accurately forecast inventory and business supply needs on weekly, monthly, and annual horizons. Additionally, you will lead the Material Handling team (2–4 members), delegating work across receiving, picking, and shipping zones to ensure inventory reliability, prevent bottlenecks, and maintain a seamless flow of goods. This position will be charge of coordinating logistics, interpreting customs & duties tariffs, and work closely with customs broker. Roles and responsibilities 

  • Inventory Management: Maintain optimal levels of production stock, tooling, parts, and business supplies in alignment with our proprietary SMART MRP system minimums and new project requirements.
  • Procurement: Generate and manage Purchase Orders (POs) throughout their lifecycle from beginning to end and manage all related data within the SMART MRP system. Maintain vendor W-9s, quality certification records and other required information.
  • Contract Renegotiation: Updating contracts with freight forwarders and carriers to include "tariff clauses" that share the burden of fluctuating costs.
  • Customs Broker Oversight: Acting as the primary point of contact for brokers, ensuring they are applying the latest regulatory updates (such as the recent 2026 updates on steel, aluminum, and semiconductors)
  • Audit-Ready Documentation: Maintaining meticulous records for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to justify classifications and avoid hefty penalties.
  • Rule of Origin Analysis: Verifying the "country of origin" for every component to utilize Free Trade Agreements (like USMCA) that may offer exemptions from blanket tariffs.
  • Strategic Sourcing: Identify and vet service and material providers, manage quality agreements, and other KPIs; use tools like scorecards to ensure suppliers are in good standing, develop and maintain strong relationships with vendors and strategic international partners.
  • Data Analysis: Assess inventory reports and ordering patterns to identify items for automated or recurring purchase; produce data-driven reports to inform intelligent purchasing decisions.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Facilitate weekly purchasing meetings with department heads to ensure timely, synchronized purchasing-related decision-making. Work with senior management on any perceived or known threats or vulnerabilities to our supply chain as well as opportunities for improvements.
  • Oversight: Maintain accurate daily records of goods received and conduct frequent cycle counts or spot audits of physical inventory. 
  • Perform other related duties as requested. 

Qualifications, Skills and Education Requirements

  • Education: 4-year degree in Business or Supply Chain Management or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in supply chain/purchasing management.
  • Technical Proficiency: Full understanding of inventory control procedures, Bill of Materials (BOM), and the ability to interpret basic technical drawings.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyze data, forecast trends, and anticipate business needs across all inventory categories.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and international suppliers where English may be a second language.
  • Logistics Insight: Ability to adapt to shifting global lead times and complex logistical time frames.
  • Soft Skills: Strong negotiation tactics, keen attention to detail, and the ability to work independently under pressure in an organized manner.
