Job Summary: 

 

The Student Supervisor position is a first-line management position that oversees the day-to-day operations of the student contingent within Patient Financial Services.  The student supervisor(s) will: 

  • Be held to professional work standards including: integrity, effective communication, demonstrating collaboration and teamwork, sound decision-making, embracing diversity and maintaining confidentiality in all work-related matters.
  • Be afforded freedom to establish their own work schedule on a semester by semester basis to avoid interfering with their academic workload.
  • Commit to work a minimum of 15 hours per week (maximum 20 hours) during academic semesters with the opportunity to work up to 40 hours/week during university breaks within PFS business hours (Monday through Friday, 6:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M.).  The student supervisor(s) will model punctuality for the student employee workforce.
  • Engage in regular communication with PFS management and staff to receive and assess assignments.
  • Address multiple tasks concurrently; organize and coordinate complex projects with varying deadlines.
  • Demonstrate the initiative to seek out new projects and tasks when all projects and tasks have been completed.

 

In this position you may be expected to: 

  • Analyze student workflow/capacity to determine student workforce needs.
  • Interview, hire, train and (as needed) discipline new student employees
  • Assign/delegate student tasks
  • Create and manage schedules
  • Process students’ payroll
  • Work closely with full time staff to ensure their needs are met in a timely manner
  • Ensure student expectations are met by students throughout the office
  • Scan important documents into appropriate healthcare systems
  • Manage various spreadsheets containing confidential student information
  • Communicate with students outside of office hours
  • Request student system accesses
  • Coordinate training throughout all departments
  • Take on and manage special projects at a moment’s notice
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing

 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Registered student at the University of Iowa taking at least 1 semester hour per semester
  • Not graduating sooner than May 2025
  • Available to work 15-20 hours per work week (Monday – Friday) during the business hours of 6:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. during school semesters.
  • Clear and concise communication skills necessary to effectively relay information to student employees, PFS management/staff and peers (fellow supervisors).
  • Strong attention to detail and proven ability to gather and analyze data and keep accurate records.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and ambiguous situations with minimal supervision.
  • Self-motivated with initiative to seek out additional responsibilities, tasks and projects.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications, i.e. Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) or comparable programs and an ability to quickly learn and apply new systems knowledge.
