Summer Research Assistant

This temporary FT, 3-month paid internship offers hands-on experience in research and education focused on American Indian and Alaska Native communities throughout California. Assistants will either work in a hybrid capacity with 2–3 days per week onsite in Fort Bidwell, CA or work 100% remote depending on placement.  

At this time, we have (2) two hybrid and (1) remote positions available. 

 

Position Summary

Under the direction of the CTEC Program Manager and as part of the Summer Research Assistant Program, the Summer Research Assistant will contribute to ongoing research projects and support educational initiatives. 

Essential Functions

  1. Conducts and coordinates activities related to various grant-funded health education and research programs.
  2. Collects data, including but not limited to survey taking, conducting key informant interviews, and facilitating follow-up calls with program participants on an as-needed basis.
  3. Performs data entry utilizing programs such as Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, and computer software such as Excel or Access.
  4. Assists with the development of reports/presentations.
  5. Provides training and technical assistance to Tribal organizations, Tribal health clinics, and American Indian community members.
  6. Assists in monitoring specifically funded program activities and special projects as assigned.
  7. Disseminates updated information to project membership as needed and/or requested.
  8. Assists with the development of program activities, curriculum, progress reports, and educational materials.
  9. Serves as a health education resource to Tribal organizations, American Indian organizations, as well as other professional organizations that serve American Indians and their communities.
  10. Serves as a collaborator between the CRIHB office and related health agencies to implement program activities.
  11. Maintains a well-organized electronic filing system for documents and other computer files.
  12. Regular and predictable attendance.
  13. Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

 

Additional Responsibilities 

  1. May be required to maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license and ability to be insurable under CRIHB’s automobile insurance.
  2. Position may require occasional overnight travel within CRIHB’s service area. 
  3. May require the ability to drive up to seven (7) hours a day.

 

Qualifications

CRIHB requires a high school diploma or equivalent for all applicants.

 

  1. Education and Experience Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate Bachelor's degree program, preferably in Public Health or a related field; OR
  • Have graduated from a Bachelor's degree program within the last two (2) years, preferably in Public Health or a related field.

 

  1. Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience or education in the public health field preferred.
  • Experience in health research or data collection and processing activities preferred. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  1. Perform literature research related to a project. 
  2. Advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  3. Experience with Tribal health systems, nonprofit organizations, or the public sector preferred.
  4. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel functions and Office 365 applications, Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, and Access.
  5. Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy and accountability.
  6. Demonstrated time management and ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
  7. Commitment to confidentiality, equity, and American Indian self-determination.

Cultural Competency

This position requires an awareness and a profound respect for American Indian/Alaska Native traditions, customs, and socioeconomic contexts. It also requires the ability to work effectively with Tribal organizations, demonstrating tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and sound judgment when handling sensitive matters.

Indian Preference

Preference in hiring is extended to qualified American Indians or Alaska Native applicants in accordance with CRIHB’s Indian Preference policy, as provided under Title 25 U.S.C. § 5307(b). This policy ensures that qualified Native applicants receive priority consideration in the hiring process. However, the final selection is based on a comprehensive evaluation of all candidates’ qualifications, experience, and alignment with the specific needs of the position. Applicants claiming Indian Preference must submit verifiable documentation of their status, such as certification from their Tribe of affiliation or other acceptable proof of Indian heritage as required by CRIHB.

CRIHB may provide information and documents that reference state laws or regulations from time to time, and in the event of inconsistency or conflict, CRIHB’s policy shall govern.
