Position Overview:
The Red Lion Inn, a National Historic Landmark established in 1773 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, seeks a motivated and detail oriented Archival Intern to support the preservation and digitization of its extensive historic collections. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to work with documents, photographs, antiques, and ephemera that reflect the Inn’s rich cultural and community legacy.
Under the guidance of the Project Manager, the Archival Intern will assist in compiling, organizing, and creating a comprehensive digital registry of historical records and objects. The intern will engage in digitization efforts including scanning, digital photography, metadata entry, and archival documentation, while following best practices for the careful handling and preservation of rare and fragile materials.
This role is ideal for individuals with an interest in art, archives, history, digital preservation, independent studies, or related fields who are eager to gain practical experience in a real‑world archival setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Preserve and Catalog: Organize and maintain historical documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, and digital files.
- The intern’s primary project will be gathering digitized material and uploading to the site’s Digital Archive Portal – FileMaker Pro.
- Responsible for photographing archival objects if photographs have not already been taken.
- The intern will work under the supervision of the Project Manager and work closely as a team to develop the database.
- The position is 20 hours per week. This could be for a summer or year-round internship.
Qualifications
- Strong organizational and cataloging skills with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of digital archiving tools and computer literacy skills.
- Basic digital photography skills needed.
- Passion for local history and hospitality is a plus. Majors of Art, Digital Media, History, Hospitality, or Independent Studies preferred, but open to any majors.

- Punctual, dependable, and proactive in maintaining cleanliness standards.
- Takes initiative and follows through with assignments with minimal supervision.
- Attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time as needed. May require bending, reaching, and handling archival materials with care.
Work Authorization: Must be eligible to work in the United States.
