Organization Description
The Capital Area Urban League (CAUL) is a community-based organization dedicated to advancing economic empowerment through housing, workforce development, education, and community engagement.
The Capital Region Realtist of New York (CRRNY) is a local professional real estate trade organization affiliated with the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB). CRRNY is committed to expanding homeownership, promoting wealth-building through real estate, and supporting equitable housing opportunities throughout the Capital Region.
Bethea Realty, a locally owned Albany-based brokerage, serves as an industry partner supporting practical real estate exposure, neighborhood market insight, and community revitalization efforts.
Together, these organizations are creating student internship opportunities that provide practical experience in housing research, market analysis, neighborhood data review, affordability assessment, and community-centered economic development work.
Position Summary
The Housing & Real Estate Market Research Intern will support applied research and data analysis related to housing markets, affordability, neighborhood conditions, homeownership trends, real estate investment activity, and community revitalization across the Capital Region. This internship is designed for students interested in applying analytical and research skills to real-world housing and community development projects.
The intern will assist with market research, demographic and property data review, affordability and investment trend analysis, and preparation of reports and summaries that support programming, public education, and strategic decision-making. The position offers hands-on experience working across nonprofit, trade association, and real estate-related initiatives.
Responsibilities
The intern’s responsibilities may include:
- Assist with housing market research related to prices, rents, inventory, and neighborhood trends
- Compile and organize property, demographic, and community development data
- Support research on affordability challenges, housing access, and homeownership trends
- Assist with neighborhood and market research tied to revitalization and community investment efforts
- Help prepare reports, briefing materials, summaries, charts, and presentations
- Support data gathering related to development activity, investment trends, and housing-related initiatives
- Help translate research findings into clear and usable information for staff, leadership, and community stakeholders
- Assist with special projects related to housing, real estate, and economic development strategy
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate interest and/or experience in several of the following areas:
- Housing market analysis
- Demographic, neighborhood, and property research
- Affordability and investment trend analysis
- Data organization and spreadsheet-based reporting
- Community development and revitalization research
- Applied research for nonprofit, public policy, or real estate-related initiatives
Minimum Qualifications
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s program required
- Master’s students preferred
- PhD students welcome with relevant experience or interest
- Coursework or demonstrated experience in business analytics, economics, finance, real estate, public policy, urban studies, geography, community development, or related fields
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace
- Intermediate comfort with Excel, Google Sheets, or other spreadsheet-based analysis tools

Desired Skills
Preferred candidates will have some combination of the following:
- Strong analytical and research skills
- Ability to organize, interpret, and summarize quantitative and qualitative information
- Experience with Excel, Google Sheets, and presentation tools
- Ability to produce clear written summaries, reports, and briefing materials
- Familiarity with public datasets, Census data, housing data, property records, or market research tools
- Interest in housing affordability, homeownership, neighborhood revitalization, or community development
- Familiarity with GIS, Tableau, Power BI, or data visualization tools is helpful but not required

Work Schedule and Environment
- Flexible schedule of approximately 25–40 hours per week
- Hybrid arrangement with some work occurring remotely and some in Albany-based settings as needed
- Internship term expected to run 10–12 weeks, with potential alignment to the academic semester
